Procedures for Processing New Monographs, Retaining Dust Jackets
Technical Services:
Technical Services (Monographs and Cataloging) units process all hard-cover monographs, but for those books that have a dust jacket, that jacket is not removed from the volume.
For the monographs with dust jackets, Tech Services units affix the bar-code label to the outside of the book's jacket itself, on the back in the upper right corner, in a similar location on the volume as is done for all processed books. Note that the bar code label is placed on the dust jacket itself, not the book's cover.
Collection Maintenance's Labeling Unit prints Se-lin™ labels for all to-be-labeled materials,
in the order in which they are received from Technical Services. ("Rush" processing is expedited, as outlined in section 9.0 below.)
Labeling affixes the call number label to each book, but for those with dust jackets, the call number label is affixed to the dust jacket rather than to the book's cover.
Books with printed pastedowns and flyleaves that contain information essential to the use of that volume are not jacketed. Call numbers for these are adhered to the book cover, and the bar code label is replaced and updated in the volume's item record. (Book jackets for these are folded inside the volume and are sent along with the volume to the location.)
Labeling sorts the labeled books with dust jackets to a designated shelf or truck for dust- jacket processing.
Labeling fits and affixes the book jacket and its clear protector to the volume.
Labeling performs the necessary book plating. Books with retained dust jackets have their plates affixed to the first flyleaf, where possible.
Labeling inserts Tattletapes™ for Main Stacks volumes.
Labeling property stamps the head and fore-edge of all volumes, and stamps the volume's front pastedown.
Labeling sorts for pickup or for delivery to proper shelving location.
