Collection managers have identified web sites to be cataloged in OSCAR that require software plug-ins to view them. Since we don't have the plug-ins on our PCs in SER, we cannot readily process these requests. The most common plug-in requested is Shockwave.
The Technical Services Committee has approved SER's decision to catalog web sites regardless of the plug-ins needed, as long as we in SER can access them well enough to process. SER will include a catalog note stating which plug-in or software version is required per the web site. This approach will provide access for patrons who may very well have the plug-in installed at their own workstation. It would be a great disservice to patrons to exclude these sites due to our own technical limitations. To not catalog them would also restrict knowledge of or access to many sites that are already noted on OSUL web pages, just not in OSCAR. IT has requested that SER identify which plug-ins are commonly used with the hope that such software may be included in future workstations.
