N.S. No. 94-3
by the Working Group to Study Shared Bibliographic Record Standards
Currently, many of the short bibliographic records created in INNOVACQ for continuation titles contain alternate author and title fields that are extremely valuable for searching by check-in staff. During the VACQ/PAC merger scheduled for December 1994, most of the INNOVACQ continuation records will be replaced with the fully cataloged OSCAR bib records. Many of the INNOVACQ alternate access entries will exist in the OSCAR bib records. For example, alternate titles (Alt Titles) for added access will appear in 246 fields; those for former, unbundled titles will be in 247 fields, and preceding entries will appear in 780 fields. However, some local INNOVACQ alternate author and title fields may not be included in the actual OSCAR record unless they can be protected from bib overlay. Fields for adding local author and title information need to be identified and protected from overlay so that all necessary alternate access points will exist in the OSCAR bib record after the merger.
After the merger of INNOPAC and INNOVACQ, local access points would be added in locally-defined 199 (added author) and 299 (added title) fields by any account unit performing serials check-in. These fields have already been established as protected fields; they will not be lost in any overlay process. This will enable us to retain important access points necessary for receipt, check-in and proper identification of continuation titles.
