AACR2 - Definitions of Terms







Monograph

  • “A bibliographic resource that is complete in one part or intended to be complete within a finite number of parts”

  • Parts may or may not be numbered

Serial

  • “A continuing resource issued in a succession of discrete parts, usually bearing numbering, that has no predetermined conclusion”

  • Issues stand alone or comprise part of a volume that could later be collected together

  • Examples: journals, newsletters, electronic journals, annual reports, newspapers

Integrating Resource

  • “A bibliographic resource that is added to or changed by means of updates that do not remain discrete and are integrated into the whole”

  • Old content is continually replaced with new content

  • Integrating resources can be Finite or Continuing

  • Examples: updating loose-leafs, updating Web sites, updating databases


Other Terms:





Iteration

  • An instance of an integrating resource, either after it is first published, or after it is updated. E.g., “what you see”

Seriality

  • Refers to a bibliographic resource that changes over time, therefore its bibliographic data changes over time

Type of Issuance

  • Refers to how the bibliographic resource is published, distributed or produced, and if it is updated, how is it updated
