Technical Services Committee
Meeting Summary
May 13, 2004

Previous minutes available at: tscomm.php.

  1. Present: Tina Schneider, John Bennett, Eleanor Block, Laura Blomquist, Tschera Connell, Marsha Hamilton, Lynda Hartel, Mary Rider, Sally Rogers (chair), Beth Russell, Laura Tull, Noelle Van Pulis, Magda El-Sherbini, Lisa Iacobellis, Wes Boomgaarden

  2. Committee approved a change in policy for call numbers for 'bound with' material. The use of the “work number”, which is a colon followed by a digit will be discontinued.

  3. Membership of committee – TSC will have 2 vacancies. Eleanor Block and Tina Schneider’s term expires on June 30. Eleanor volunteered to extend her term for one more year. Betty Sawyers will be sending an email announcement about all committee vacancies.

  4. Draft survey on Technical Services communications – Committee reviewed draft survey developed by working group (Mary Rider, Lisa Iacobellis, Noelle Vanpulis and Eleanor Block). Working group will revise survey to consolidate questions about delivery mechanisms and content. When survey is finalized, Blake Carver can produce a web form. Will also need to convert the survey to pdf format in case people want to print out and mail in.

  5. Duplicate call numbers – Magda presented statistics on the number of duplicate call numbers reported for new OSCAR records added to the system from Jan. through Mar., 2004. There were 216 duplicates for call numbers that are not normally checked during cataloging (about 1% of such titles). This data is in relation to previous discussions in TSC about eliminating local practices. Current policy is to check and adjust call numbers for a limited number of call number areas only. Magda stated that over time, the number of duplicates would diminish in relation to LC copy that we accept because LC’s policy is to create unique call numbers for each title. This issue is important in relation to the shelf-ready approvals project, where a vendor will provide call number labels so Tech Services will not be adjusting any call numbers. Those who have agreed to participate in the shelf-ready test have agreed to forego local call number adjustments.

  6. Future of information access – Sally mentioned this issue in relation to the idea that we normally try to provide access to everything through the catalog. Now that we have the Knowledge Bank, OhioLINK DMC, etc. we may want to revisit this issue in the broader context of the future of information access. This item will be on July 8 agenda for further discussion. It is also a topic that Sally raised with the Executive Committee as needing library-wide consideration over the next year.
