  1. Electronic Theses and Dissertations (El-Sherbini, Murphy)

Magda and Jim presented a memo of questions to be considered: elthedis.htm.

The decisions made by the committee include:

Call numbers - continue the call number scheme currently used for theses and dissertations.

Single/Multiple record - a single record will be used for the print, microform and electronic copies; there will be an item record for the electronic version as well as microform or print.

Subject headings - beginning only with the electronic dissertations, Cataloging will begin adding at least one LSCH subject heading. Keywords assigned by the student will also be added as 653 fields which index in the keyword file but not the subject heading file in OSCAR.

Abstract - the abstract will be added as a 520 note which will be indexed in the keyword index.

URL - The URL will be edited to include a subfield |z Connect to this title online

Location code - a location code for electronic books (wwb) will be established and used for this category as well as other electronic books. See later proposal.

Availability note - a 530 notes will be added which reads Available online via OhioLINK's ETD Center

Proper inputting by students - the Cataloging Dept. will be asked to work with Pat McCandless and the Graduate School to improve the inputting of students as noted in the attached proposal.

  2. Millenium Summary Screen (Tull)

The Millenium Summary Screen does not default to showing all attached records like the current system does. It defaults to one type of record and then you have to click on "a All record types" to display all the attached records. For example, the default in MilAcq is order record and in MilSer it is check-in records. We would prefer that it defaults to the all record types summary screen. Laura was asked to proceed with constructing an enhancement to submit to Innovative.

  3. Location Codes for CORC resources (Connell)

The linked proposal - loccodes.htm - was submitted by Tschera for location codes for electronic resources. Her proposal was approved.

    wwj - electronic journals
    wwb - electronic books
    www - all other resources

These new codes will be implemented with electronic dissertations. The existing electronic books in the system will also need to be updated. The display to the public will be read the same for all of these codes.

  4. Serials Solutions (Davis)

A small working group (Penny Pearson, Trisha Davis and Laura Tull) have recommended that we proceed with a small trial to test a solution for mounting access to titles in full-text aggregators on a web page which can be purchased and updated monthly from a company called Serials Solution. Their proposal is that we purchase a one year subscription to this product to get an HTML list for loading to the web which is updated monthly. The web listing would be made available to public services only as a test.

This proposal was approved. Carol will take the proposal next to the Executive Committee.

  5. Enriched Tables of Content (Diedrichs)

Carol shared an e-mail from CIC which included examples of enriched Tables of Content - erichtoc.htm. The committee was enthusiastic about considering the cost of providing such information. Carol will add to the next Collection Managers' Forum agenda and pursue cost information.

  6. BCODE3 options for Withdrawn titles (Van Pulis)

(see related e-mail message from Noelle for background information)

Noelle presented several recommendations based on her recent work with Nancy Helmick on the disposition of Withdrawn titles.

Should last copy withdrawn titles be displayed at OhioLINK central, in our local catalog, or anywhere?

OhioLINK libraries would like for us to suppress these records from central.

In the early dates of OSCAR implementation, we determined that there were reasons to display these records in OSCAR. Have those reasons changed? TSC would like for there to be rediscussion and consideration of this decision.

Laura and Noelle will develop examples to be used for discussion at the 5/16 Collection Managers' Forum.

We also need to distribute and discuss the withdrawal policy at that Forum and remind collection managers of the need to move missing materials into this category.

Should the note specifying owning location from which the material is being withdrawn be mandatory rather than optional? The committee determined that there was no need for a change to this policy.

  7. Committee Appointments for FY02 (Diedrichs)

Carol noted that the following appointments end on 6/30/01:

Sherry Engle - (ISD - representing special collections or a reading room in Main)
    Lynda Hartel (HEA)
    Mary Rider (Law)
Mary Scott (SEL - representing a large location library)

She will be putting a call for volunteers out in May for these vacancies.

  8. Next meeting - the next meeting will be held June 7, 2001, 10:30-12:00.
