Technical Services Committee
Meeting Summary
February 28, 2002
Previous minutes available at:
tscomm.htm
Present:
Eleanor Block, Wes Boomgaarden, Tschera Connell, Trisha Davis, Carol Diedrichs (chair), Magda El-Sherbini, Lynda Hartel, Penny Pearson, Mary Rider, Marian Shemberg.
- Olinks linking service (Penny Pearson)
Penny described the Olinks service. She is sending quarterly lists of journals and ISSNs to OhioLINK so that OhioLINK can make the links. There is no change to current processing in SER.
- Issues from Recent DMSC meeting (Tschera Connell)
- Millenium issues
(From the DMSC minutes) Libraries who have begun to implement Millennium discussed the problems they are experiencing, especially with the Serials module. Slowness, screens freezing, and features working inconsistently were among the problems discussed. Libraries who have begun to use Millennium will attempt to document specific problems more thoroughly and report back to the Committee at the next meeting.
OSU and Wright State agreed to document specific problems to take forward to the next DMSC meeting. Many of the OL libraries do not yet have Millennium so any known issues, if a local problem, will also be reported. Laura’s list of known issues will be send out to TSC for review.
- Bib records at Central for Locally Purchased Electronic Materials – Which (if any) proposal do we like?
Options:
- Have two URL’s -- one that connects to the resource itself and one that connects to an explanation of reasons the user might not be able to access it. The committee agreed that this was difficult to implement because the possible reasons are so varied.
- Change the message above the URL box to something that includes a disclaimer saying that users might not be able to access the resource in all situations. While the committee recognized this as a possible solution, they did not like the fact that the same message would display even for OhioLINK resources which are available to everyone.
- Another Bcode 3 solution. In this case probably a new bcode3 for a locally owned resource. The committee would need to define this very carefully. Mike Boock agreed to draft an enhancement request for consideration by the committee by 2/22. Any enhancement would then need to be referred to User Services for their consideration at their March 8 meeting. Inn-Reach enhancements should be submitted to Anita by March 15.
TSC agreed with DMSC preference for option c.
- ETDs and future workflow (Magda El-Sherbini)
Magda reported that the cataloging of ETDs is well underway. CAT has been working on standards and procedures for some time. Mandatory submission of dissertations begins Autumn quarter.
- Page numbers in labels (Mary Scott)
Mary raised the point that page numbers are often needed with volume numbering (in contrast to the more common use of volume and issue) to match how some scientific journals are cited especially for materials stored at STX. See example appended to the end of the minutes.
Note: Investigation by Noelle after the meeting revealed that page numbers (pp.) have been a valid identifier as far back as 1996 (the date of the last version of the document prior to putting it up on the CAT website). No changes in procedures are needed.
- Tech Services Memos (Carol Diedrichs)
The question was raised whether Tech Services Memos needed to be systematically reviewed for currency and for adding to the TS Web. Some of this work has been done already (by Lisa Iacobellis and by CAT). It was decided that no further action needed to be taken at this point.
- URL checking (Laura Tull, Magda El-Sherbini, Tschera Connell)
Magda and Tschera had been working with Laura to figure out a procedure for the URL checker developed by IT. They recommended that the URL checker would be run over the entire database with the results divided between CAT and SER: CAT will get the list of bad URLs for monographs (including wwb); SER will get the list of bad URLs for wwj, www and material type “s”. After this initial list is corrected, an analysis will be done of the kinds of URLs that could not be corrected. TSC decided it was premature to decide policy on how to handle these until the scope of the problem is understood.
Next meeting: June 27, 2002 (Room 122 – Main Library)
