Training Advisory Council
October 26 & November 2, 2000
MINUTES
October 26--Joe Branin joined the Training Advisory Council for the
first portion of the Council meeting on October 26. The importance of
training was reiterated, as well as the need for a training plan. We
should foster an atmosphere of continuous learning, with customer
service training being the most important. We need to consider the
Libraries' culture and identify how it can either help or hinder in
training efforts.
Joe Branin indicated that he thought the Council is doing a lot of good
training, but a needs assesment should be done to determine what is being done
adequately and what is still needed. He sees the Council as a central resource,
drawing on the interest and expertise of Libraries' personnel. The development
and maintenance of a central training calendar would also be of benefit. The
Libraries' administration is very supportive of training activities, and would
encourage long range planning to provide continuity to the Libraries' training
efforts.
After Joe left the meeting, the group began a discussion and identification of
the responsibilities of the Training Advisory Council, the individual members,
the Chair, and the Council Advisor, as well an all inclusive listing of what
exactly is included in "Training". [This discussion wasn't concluded in this
session, but was continued at a second session; combined listings from the two
meetings are included at the end of this document.]
It was decided that the relatively low attendance at the Student Training
Workshops warranted the holding of two additional sessions of each Workshop. It
was also suggested that Joe Branin should be approached about sending a message
reminding supervisors of the importance of the training, and that all students
were expected to attend the sessions.
The next meeting was scheduled for November 2 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 124 Main
Library.
November 2--Identification of training activities and responsibilities of the
Council and individuals was continued. Lisa appointed Betty Sawyers as Chair of
a subcommittee to categorize the listing of training activities; other
subcommittee members were Linda Gonzalez, Lisa Iacobellis, and Charles Smith.
[The results of that categorization is reflected in the listing of training
activities that follows.]
The next meeting of the Council will be on December 14 in Room 124 Main Library.
