Pre-Work for Performance Review Workshop
What to bring to the Workshop: 1)The white three ring binder you
received at the Performance Management: Planning for Success Workshop
and 2) the completed pre-work described below.
Pre-work
The process of conducting performance reviews this year will include the
employee beginning the process with a self performance evaluation which they
will discuss with you. Self evaluations make the evaluations meaningful to the
employee because they generally know best what they have and have not
accomplished. It is also easier for the supervisor because the employee composes
the general template of the evaluation to which the supervisor adds, discusses,
and substantiates as needed. It also begins the performance planning and
development process for the next review cycle.
In order to help you understand the self evaluation process, please complete the
following pre-work in preparation for the Workshop. Please do not spend more
than 30-45 minutes on the pre-work.
Remember, this is just an exercise, so please do not make this a project. Your
self evaluation will not be discussed or reviewed with the workshop group. It
will not be graded. It will give you a good idea of what your employees will
feel and the support they will need from you in order to do a self evaluation.
We will discuss this self evaluation process more in the workshop including how
you handle an employee with an inflated or deflated view of their own
performance.
Pre-work instructions (You may want to print these instructions for reference)
1. Open Word and go to the W drive. Open the HR Info files.
Several files are located here. These files are for you to use in either
Word or WordPerfect as a word processing template. The three worksheets for
Performance Management are in this HR info file: Performance Planning
Worksheet, Development Planner, Performance Review Form.
2. Copy the Performance Review Form to Word. You may also want to print a
copy of this form.
3. Read the Performance Review form and the instructions. Review the seven
dimensions that are expected of all employees (Quality Service,
Dependability..., Cooperation..., Communication, Analysis..., Learning and
Development, Job Knowledge) and the two additional dimensions for
supervisors of staff and students (Performance Management and Leadership).
Under each dimension there are bullets (or performance criteria) that you
may or may not consider in your self evaluation. The bullets are guidelines
only.
4. Review the last page that defines the performance ratings.
5. Now, let's try it...write a self performance evaluation on yourself using
the Performance Review Form. You may complete the self evaluation on the
computer or by hand, but try it on the computer.
How do you evaluate yourself?
1. Gather information (you know what you have and have not accomplished in
the last 12 months and why)
2. Analyze the information
3. Transfer the information to the Performance Review form
4. Assign a rating that describes your performance in each dimension and
then overall
6. Print a copy of your draft self evaluation form and bring it to the
workshop.
