Minutes
The minutes of the March 27, 2007 meeting were approved as written.

Somali presentation
On March 9, 2007 the Lantern, the student newspaper of the Ohio State University, had the following headline: "Somali event a no-show despite best efforts." Cyndi Preston first spotted this article, then she and Eleanor discussed it via email, then, at their March 13 meeting, the Diversity Committee discussed the possibility of sponsoring this presentation. Cyndi was able to contact the speaker, Danielle Smith, and a presentation entitled "Raising Cultural Awareness: a Look at the Somali population in Columbus, Ohio" has been scheduled for Thursday, May 24, 2007, 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. in Room 090, Science and Engineering Library (SEL). Everything is/will be ready for the May 24 presentation; for example, Mike Vanecko, SEL, will do the room set up and Cyndi and Larry Allen, Communications Coordinator, will do the publicity. Cyndi will talk to Danielle Smith the week of the presentation to make sure that everything is ready.

Multicultural Center
Duke Morgan met with Nicole K. Nieto, Coordinator of Women Student Services at the Multicultural Center and explored how the Diversity Committee and the Multicultural Center can work together to present programs. The Multicultural Center is looking for places to present their programs and Duke told Ms. Nieto about the availability of space in the Science and Engineering Library, in Sullivant Hall and in the Study Place Along High (SPAH, the former Long's Book Store). The Multicultural Center does not need places now, but they will in the fall.

Diversity Committee membership
Cyndi Preston's and Amanda Clark's membership on the Diversity Committee expires June 30, 2007. Amanda will continue on the committee; Cyndi has chosen not to continue. Linda Gonzalez will notify Betty Sawyers, the Faculty Secretary and keeper of the list of committee vacancies, about our opening.

Resident Librarian position
All of the members of the Diversity Committee have been appointed to the Search and Screen Committee for the Mary P. Key Resident Librarian position. Cyndi Preston is the chair of the committee. Linda Gonzalez and Marsha Hamilton are serving as ex-officio members of the search committee, Linda as affirmative action advocate and Marsha as the head of the Monographs Department (MOD), where the resident will be working.

The first, organizational meeting of the search committee will be Monday, May 21, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. (time confirmed after the meeting) in Room 414 SEL. Cyndi will send us the latest version of the job description, which has been updated to reflect that the resident will be working in MOD. At the meeting, the committee members will receive their orientation to the duties and responsibilities of a search committee, the job description will be finalized, and a schedule for the rest of the meetings (date, time and location) will be established.

Linda gave us a general time frame for filling the position: June-- recruit applicants (do a national search as we normally do), July-- do the on campus interviews, and August-- have the successful candidate start to work at OSUL. Everyone was reminded that all of the applications received will need to be read by all of the search committee members before the meeting is held to discuss the applications. Linda stated that all files of the applicants will be kept in the Human Resources Office at Ackerman at all times. Finally, Linda described the four screenings that will take place: (1) the committee looks at all applicants, (2) some applicants have telephone interviews, (3) chosen candidates are interviewed on campus and (4) the references are checked.

Next meeting
The next scheduled meeting will be Tuesday, May 22, 2007 1:15 p.m.-2:15 p.m. in Room 414, Science and Engineering Library.
