Meeting with residents and their supervisors
Before 2004, the objective of the Mary P. Key Diversity Residency program was to have the resident rotate through many library departments to give the resident an over-all view of how an academic library operates. The focus was changed last year to allow the resident to work in a designated area that offered hands-on experience. The program would also give the resident a broad overview of the entire library organization and support her/his professional development, both locally and at the national level.

This year, the residents, Eboni Francis and Deidra Herring, are based in two specific departments, FAE for Eboni and MOD for Deidra. Now that the new program has been operating for several months, the Diversity Committee is using today's meeting to discuss with the residents and their supervisors (Susan Logan, FAE for Eboni and Marsha Hamilton, MOD for Deidra) how the program is working out-- positives, negatives, changes needed, etc.

Both Susan and Marsha have the residents imitate what the supervisors do. For Eboni, that includes doing collection development and library instruction, working with the faculty in their collection development area, working at the reference desk and serving on committees. For Deidra, that includes doing approvals, collection management and copy cataloging, planning workflow and the use of Millennium Acquisitions, and working with the vendors. Deidra has also been trained using a large and intense online course on acquisitions. The residents and their supervisors discuss what is being done and, sometimes, an activity that one resident is doing (e.g., working with library funds) is added to the other's training. Finally, Linda Gonzalez meets separately once a month with each resident.

Committee members and guests then spent a lot of time talking about what opportunities the residents should have, for how long (e.g., one day) and whether these activities should be done together or separately (with experiences compared). Possibilities discussed included:

work with/shadow:
the Director of Libraries
people in-- the Business, Development and Human Resources Offices (in HR, hiring for a position among other things), security, preservation, reference, automation and digital resources, department and special collections libraries of interest to the resident and the teaching faculty in these areas

attend the meetings of:
OSU libraries-- faculty, Policy and Planning, other committees
Ohio State University-- University Senate; Office of Human Resources, Organization & Human Resource Development, STEP Program; other groups
various library groups-- OhioLINK (especially LAC- Library Advisory Committee), OCLC
professional library organizations on the local, state and national level such as ALA and ALAO

serve on:
committees of interest to the resident

prepare written reports for:
immediate supervisor-- weekly or whatever the supervisor wants; perhaps also an annual report
Diversity Committee-- every six months from the time when the resident starts working here; the report is to be posted on the committee website with copies to the immediate supervisors; the first report is due October 31, 2005

Miscellaneous items
attend the I am a book and I am a serial tours
have a glossary of useful library terms (the Training Advisory Council already has such a glossary)
All of the above activities should be spread out over the two year period of the residency.

Workshop on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender (GLBT) issues
Duke Morgan announced that the GLBT workshop will be a brown bag given on Monday, October 17, 12 noon to 1 p.m. by Brett Beemyn in the Main Library. Duke is still working on the room assignment. Linda Gonzalez will handle the beverages and Duke will look into the possibility of having food. The question of an honorarium for the speaker was also raised. Once all of the details are known, Eleanor Block will notify Larry Allen so that an announcement can put in Quick Notes.

Video on Islamic Art
All committee members should watch the video entitled Islamic Art, which was suggested as a possible program by Pat McCandless, former committee chair. Dona Straley will be glad to help us with any presentation that we may do based on this video.

Frequency of programs
It was suggested that the Diversity Committee present at least one program per quarter. The tentative line-up now is:

Fall Quarter 2005-- Workshop on Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender issues
Winter Quarter 2006-- the video Islamic Art
Spring Quarter 2006-- the Somali people and their situation

Next meeting
The next meeting will be held Tuesday, September 27, 1:30-2:30 p.m. in Room 102.
