GUIDELINES FOR TEACHING COURSES AT THE OHIO STATE UNIVERSITY

Responsible Committee: CFBPR
History: 6/1/78; rev.3/87; rev.3/94; rev.6/00; reaffirmed 7/05

Teaching is a part of the regular responsibilities of faculty of the University Libraries. The teaching of scheduled courses is one form of teaching, and all faculty are encouraged to participate when it is appropriate. Library faculty may teach library-related and non-library-related courses.

Guidelines for classroom teaching

1. Librarians who are invited to teach a course offered by the Ohio State University, including its regional campuses and the Office of Continuing Education, will submit a written request to their immediate supervisor or Assistant Director, and the academic department regarding time devoted to the preparation and teaching of the course and compensation. The written request to teach a scheduled course will be forwarded to the Director of Libraries for final approval.

2. Librarians must use the appropriate student evaluation forms as used in the academic department to evaluate their teaching performance. Librarians are advised to arrange for the distribution of student evaluation documents with the department before the beginning of the teaching quarter.

3. Classroom teaching will be considered assigned time. Joint appointments should be considered if the librarian is devoting a significant amount of time to classroom teaching on a regular basis.
