Author’s "Funny in Farsi" Program Adds Humor to the Iranian-American Experience

Firoozeh Dumas, author of a lighthearted memoir chronicling her experiences moving from Iran to America at age seven, will present a free one-woman show based on her book on Monday, January 24, 5:30 p.m., at the Wexner Center Film/Video Theatre, 27 W.17th Ave.

Dumas’ program, based on her bestselling book, “Funny in Farsi,” chronicles the American journey of the author’s engaging family: her engineer father, a quixotic dreamer who first sought riches on Bowling for Dollars and in Las Vegas, and later lost his job during the Iranian revolution; her elegant mother, who never fully mastered English; her uncle, who combated the effects of American fast food with an army of American weight-loss gadgets; and Firoozeh herself, who as a girl changed her name to Julie, and encountered a second wave of culture shock when she met and married a Frenchman.

Dumas shares her observations as the family grapples with American English, traditions and culture. Ultimately, the program is one of identity, discovery, and the power of family love. Dumas will autograph copies of her book following the program, which will be on sale at the event.

The program is being presented by the University Libraries and sponsored by the Friends of the Library. Contact Shannon Weiher in the development office at 247-6828 for more information.

Nima Shafaieh receives Spot Bonus

Nima volunteered on short notice to be the primary staff coordinator after the previous person took a job in another department. He organized incoming requests, ordered the books, tracked late arriving titles and worked with vendors to speed receipt; coordinated the cataloging of new titles with CAT and the pulling of existing titles by CMT staff and students; and made sure all books were labeled, plated, repaired and ready for the Faculty Recognition reception. Nima was instrumental in setting up and breaking down the book exhibit at the Faculty Club, including getting soaking wet getting materials back to the Libraries safe and dry in book bins covered with plastic. After the reception, Nima continued to assist with "clean up" tasks related to the program.
