Newspaper Cartoon Artists, 1898-1909

A new web page, "Newspaper Cartoon Artists, 1898-1909," has been posted at the Cartoon Research Library web site. It features the work of 10 artists from the San Francisco Academy of Comic Art collection. The site can be accessed through the Cartoon Research Library page:

The comic strips are presented in two sizes, one a full-page view sized to fit in a browser window, the other a larger view that makes it possible to read the text in each panel. Single-panel cartoons are presented in one size only. In a few cases, where the original text is extremely small, transcriptions are provided.

Reference questions about the collection should be sent to: cartoons@osu.edu.

Gillray's Legacy

September 15-December 10, 2004
Philip Sills Exhibit Hall
William Oxley Thompson Memorial Library
The Ohio State University Libraries

James Gillray. Company shocked by a Lady getting up to Ring the Bell, pub. November 20, 1804. Hale Scrapbook, Draper Hill Collection, The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library

Gillray's Legacy is part of the 2004 Festival of Cartoon Art. Celebrating Georgian England's greatest caricaturist as part of a twenty-first century conference focusing on censorship, self-censorship and editorial control may seem far-fetched. During an election year at a time of heightened national and international concerns, it is, however, most appropriate to remember that James Gillray was neither restrained nor genteel with his art. He created grotesquely exaggerated caricatures of the rich and famous of his time.

With this exhibition we also celebrate the British tradition of freedom of expression that was exported to its American colonies. The roots of the New World's editorial cartoons were in England where presses were not licensed and caricaturists were not subject to prior censorship.

James Gillray. Monstrous Craws, pub.May 29, 1787. Prints and Photographs Division, Library of Congress (PC 1-7166)

James Gillray has been called the first master draftsman with caricature as his primary occupation. He built upon the artistic heritage provided by William Hogarth's narrative prints. Gillray also benefited from Hogarth's Act, the copyright law of 1735 that protected original engraved designs from copyists for fourteen years. The complex interrelationship of art, commentary, and business faced by today's editorial cartoonists was experienced by Gillray more than two hundred years ago.

Designs by Gillray from the collections of The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library in this exhibition are supplemented by reproductions of his work courtesy of the Library of Congress, Art Institute of Chicago, and Draper Hill. The reproductions in the exhibition are the same size the print was originally published. Gillray's Legacy is a small sample of two decades of his social and political satires that seeks to inspire further interest in his work.

The catalogue for this exhibition may be purchased at The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library, 27 West 17th Avenue Mall.

Consistently Exceed Expectations

The Libraries are very pleased to recognize ten staff members who "consistently exceeded expectations" for the 2002-03 performance review year. The Libraries' administration anticipated that between 0 - 10% of all staff would consistently exceed expectations for the year.

The staff members who consistently exceeded expectations this year are:

(Left to Right) Mary Ries (MIC),
Elva Griffith (Rare Books), Donna Distel (WEL)
(Left to Right) Debra Jackson (Coll Maint),
Stephanie Nicol (CAT)
Jeff Thomas (University Archives) Michael Murray (Music Library)
Not pictured: Sherry Dabe (Cataloging), Chuck Brown (Monographs),
Terri Camelford (SER), Janie McIntyre (ASA). Michael Walsh (Interlibrary Loan)

By definition, the ten employees recognized "Consistently exceeded all job expectations. Demonstrated an on-going pattern of high-level 'knock your socks off' extraordinary performance that significantly impacted the entire unit or Libraries at a level recognized as outstanding by peers, unit leaders and others. Usually characterized as never been done before, unmatched, not equaled and easily recognized by others in the unit as being extraordinary. This rating is intended to recognize specific, exceptional, 'above and beyond' performance in the particular year under review, and not to recognize high-level performance that is generally consistent from year to year".

Spot Bonus Awards

Christina Moore

In September 2003 the Head of the Cataloging Department, Magda El-Sherbini, asked Christina Moore to teach staff members of the regional campus libraries to do copy cataloging using OCLC's CatME. Christina first held two half-day training sessions in the Cataloging Department during Fall Quarter 2003 for staff members from the Mansfield, Lima and Newark campuses.

She then created very detailed documentation specifically for the regional campus libraries that describes how to do copy cataloging using CatME. This guide, which now has 26 pages is revised each quarter and is in its 4th revision. Because of its size, Christina hopes to put this document on the web. She has conducted telephone training sessions to help people process their records and to answer any questions that may arise. She also uses email to describe procedures (e.g., using the online save file) and, after reviewing records, explain policies. Questions can occur as often as once a week or ten times a day depending on how far along in their training people are.

People are released from their probationary review period after they meet certain standards (e.g., recognizing Library of Congress call numbers and subjects, overlaying records correctly, spotting missing data, adding/changing item records correctly, etc.). At the present time, Mansfield and Lima no longer have their records reviewed and a Newark staff member is just staring to learn to catalog. Someone from the Marion library will probably undergo this catalog training in the fall. On the average, Christina generally reviews about 50-200 records a week from the online save file.

Christina is now creating a listserv to facilitate information sharing. The listserv will allow her to answer questions more efficiently and provide pertinent information on changes in cataloging practices and policies. It is also a good way of notifying the regional campuses of system problems.

Christina Moore is actively engaged in training. Not only is she doing this copy cataloging and CatME training for the regional campus libraries but she is also one of several people working on the OCLC Connexion documentation and training. Christina has excellent writing skills and is able to reduce complicated procedures into clear and concise documentation. We are fortunate to have Christina as a staff member. She does all of her jobs with enthusiasm and welcomes new assignments and challenges.

Building Excellence through Staff Training (BEST)

The Office of Human Resources, Organization and Human Resource Development (OHRD) unit has created a new version of the popular professional development program for staff called "Building Excellence through Staff Training" (BEST) known as "BEST-B." The program is targeted for office and administrative support staff and is specifically designed to enhance their skills and performance in their careers at The Ohio State University.

"BEST-B" is a series of five, new half-day classes that will be offered once weekly for five weeks. The classes include:

  • FISH! - Energize your workplace with four principles…Play, Make Their Day, Choose Your Attitude, and Be There developed by the fishmongers at the Pike Place Fish Market in Seattle.
  • Office Culture - Analyze the culture of your office and see how it impacts you. Learn tips for making changes to your culture.
  • Dealing with Difficult People - Learn how to understand and adapt to difficult people.
  • Creativity - Enhance your creative skills and learn how to use creativity as a problem solving tool. Start becoming the creative person you have always wanted to be.
  • Who Moved My Cheese? - Through a fun parable, learn ways to deal with change. Leave a change "guru".

Applicants can be administrative or support staff with any amount of work experience at the university. Participation is limited to 30 individuals in order to maximize the interaction between participants and program facilitators. Enrollment is available for fall, winter or spring quarter classes.

More information on the "Building Excellence through Staff Training" program can be found at: http://hr.osu.edu/ohrd/best.htm. The site contains a brief description of the program and a link to online registration.

Please note that the deadline to enroll in the fall BEST-B program is October 7, 2004 on a first-come, first-serve basis. Those closed out of the fall quarter classes are still eligible to register for winter or spring quarter classes.

If you have already participated in the original BEST-A program you are still welcome to participate in the new BEST-B - different classes are offered in each program. Also, BEST-A is not a pre-requisite to enrolling in the BEST-B program.

The original BEST Series, BEST-A, will be offered again in Spring Quarter 2005.

If you have any additional questions regarding either "BEST" program please contact Maddy Weisz in OHRD at (614) 292-4500 or at weisz.2@osu.edu
