We have nearly reached $14 million of our $30 million dollar goal and look forward to this opportunity to announce the campaign - and the design for the new library - to the Ohio State community. Our President Karen Holbrook, our campaign chairs, Jim and Ellen Tressel, and our director Joe Branin will attend the festivities. Hope you'll plan on joining us! Gay Jackson and Shannon T. Weiher.! Digital Initatives Steering Committee The Digital Initiatives Steering Committee (DISC) has created a new Web site to provide more information about the array of digital projects with which the Libraries is currently associated. These include collections of images, brittle books, theses and dissertations, scholarly journals and supplementary materials, various collection guides and databases. View the Digital Projects site at: http://library.osu.edu/sites/dlib/ or by selecting "Digital Projects" from the Libraries menu on the OSUL home page. If you have comments or questions, please send them to the committee mailing list (libdisc@lists.acs.ohio-state.edu). Digital Initiatives Steering Committee (DISC)

Vika's and Dennis's many job responsibilities include selection and downloading of bib records, processing of approval orders, receipt, duplicate identification and problem-solving, and copy cataloging of approval books in the Monographs Department. In previous fiscal years, it was common for backlogs of approval books to accumulate during peak periods. This delayed patron access to new books and slowed processing of invoices for payment. This is common in most libraries that receive large, uneven-sized approval shipments, especially around holidays when many staff and selectors are absent. Once begun, the backlogs may take months to clear, since more approval materials continue to be shipped 52 weeks per year. Marsha Hamilton, head of the Monographs Department, set a goal to have all in-process backlogs cleared and to handle new materials continually on a "just in time" basis. Vika and Dennis made an extraordinary effort to successfully achieve and then to maintain this difficult goal. On their own initiative, they identified ways to increase production and speed throughput while accepting new responsibilities related to the processing of other materials. The extraordinary work Dennis and Vika performed to keep approval receipts current made it possible, with the work of other members of the sections, to clear more approval invoices this June than previously thought possible prior to a fiscal close. |
