Biography of Edward Orton, Jr.

Edward Orton, Jr. was born October 8, 1863 in New York. His father, Edward Orton, Sr., was the first president of The Ohio State University. Orton, Jr. graduated from Ohio State University with an Engineer of Mines degree in 1884. After nine years in industry, Orton returned to the university as the Director of the new Department of Ceramics in 1894. During his time in the department, Orton was considered a pioneer in the field and his own efforts were largely responsible for the creation of the Ohio Engineering Experiment Station. Orton was also Dean of the College of Engineering from 1902 to 1906 and again from 1910 to 1915. In 1917, during World War I, Orton left the university and entered the United States military service. Although he would not return to teaching, Orton kept his close ties with the university. In honor of his father, Orton endowed the Edward Orton, Sr. Memorial Library. During his professional career, Orton held many positions including being the first Secretary of the American Ceramic Society (1899-1917) and later its president (1930). He was also the President of the Ohio Institute of Mining Engineers (1893-1894) and the Ohio State Geologist (1899-1906). Orton married twice, first to Mary Princess Anderson (from 1888 until her death in 1927) and later to Mina Althea Orton (from 1928 until his death). He died after a short illness on February 10, 1932.
