Conducting a Patent Search

Tips for searching patents (1976-present)
  1. Go to the U.S. Patent Search Page.
  2. Choose Quick Search.
  3. Enter appropriate search terms.
  4. View information about the patent by clicking on its title or number.
  5. Click on Images to view the patent
  6. Tips:

    • Note: Patents before 1976 are not searchable by keywords
    • Note classification numbers of patents that are close to what you are looking for - this will be useful for older patents. These are listed next to Current U.S. Class
    • Having trouble viewing images? Get help.
Tips for searching patents (pre 1976)
  1. Pre 1976 patents are only searchable via patent number and class.
  2. Use the previous directions to find similar patents and use the class numbers to search for older patents.
  3. You can also view information about class numbers online.
  4. You can browse class numbers by topic (click on the white P in a red rectangle).
