SEL History
On January 3, 1993, the Science and Engineering Library (SEL) began operation as a combined library for physical sciences and engineering and architecture. Under one roof, it houses nearly 400,000 bound volumes and holds subscriptions to 3,100 print journals and a growing number of online indexes and journal titles. The collection has been built on the combined resources of what had been seven separate libraries. Those libraries, and the dates they were founded, are:
Charles Cutler Sharp Library of Chemistry (1925)
Engineering Library (1969)
Mathematics Library (1962)
Materials Engineering Library (1925)
Alfred Dodge Cole Memorial Library of Physics(1930)
Perkins Observatory Library (1935)
Perkins Collection at Smith Laboratory (1989)
Earlier(1969), the Engineering Library was created by combining the collections of:
Aeronautical-Civil Engineering Library (1960)
Brown Hall (Architecture and Civil Engineering)(1915)
Electrical Engineering Library (1961; previously an uncatalogued office collection)
Mechanical Engineering
A. F. Davis Welding Library (1942)

Computer Science, which originally had been a part of Mathematics Library, was also relocated to the Engineering Library. The Geology Library remains a separate entity.

In 1998, SEL added patents to its collections and is an official U.S. Patent and Trademark Depository Library.

The library building, a free-standing five story building with 104,146 gross sq. ft. and 68,669 net sq. ft. , and the nearby classroom and Mathematics buildings, are the only buildings in Central Ohio by Philip Johnson. Among his other works are the AT&T Building in New York City and the Crystal Cathedral in California.

As part of the Ohio Percent for Arts, SEL features hand-blown glass art by the contemporary American artist Dale Chihuly. Chihuly's work is opposite the main entry to SEL.

Wall Installation #4, Dale Chihuly

Chihuly, Dale -- 1941- - www.chihuly.com - Dale Chihuly is one of the most creative and audacious glassblowers of modern times. This site offers beautiful photographs of smaller glass objects (including baskets, seaforms, and Venetians), larger installations (including chandeliers, reeds and spears, neon, and windows) and examples of temporary and permanent displays at museums and art galleries around the world. The site gives a brief biography and a chronology of his career to date.

To find additional information about the architects and the artist, do a subject search on their names in OSCAR.
