Field 793 is used at OSUL for locally defined titles, and is used most commonly in special collections for tracing named collections. Depending on curator preference, the 793 can be used in addition to 590 notes for donors and/or 79x added entries tracings. The use of a unique collection title is strongly encouraged, as it allows retrieval of all material in a given collection, regardless of location or format.

In addition to tracing collection titles in 793 fields, local authority records may be established to point to the chosen form of the title.
