SPECIAL   COLLECTIONS   CATALOGING   (SCCAT)

Special Collections Cataloging Department
Quarterly Report: January - March 2008

CGA

San Francisco Academy of Comic Arts cataloging was Mary’s main activity. The student assistant responsible for comic book cataloging will be graduating at the end of spring quarter, so efforts are underway to hire a replacement. Pat created some collection records for CGA.

CHA

Mary, Joan, and Nataliya are all currently working on Charvat project materials. Mary continues to provide guidance and review of Nataliya’s work. The workflow for NACO contributions from the Charvat collection is under review in Authority Control and Database Maintenance.

Responsibility for Charvat catalog cards was transferred from Authority Control and Database Maintenance to SCCAT. Morag cleared the backlog of cards. Discussions were begun with CHA about the future workflows and requirements for shelflist cards.

HIL

The Pimen M. Sofronov Collection is approximately half completed. All titles for HIL are cataloged; Nataliya will next catalog titles for other Special Collections, including RAR. STX titles have been given to Cataloging.

RARE

Pat transferred approximately 150 titles from Fine Arts to Rare, which required adding some notes and replacing some bibliographic records. Pat also updated URLs for finding aids. Pat’s other cataloging duties Included Avant Writing, Raymond Carver/Tess Gallagher Collection, and the Lillian Schwartz Collection. Anca concentrated on new acquisitions and serials identified by the collection staff. Anca began work on the Jerry Tarver Elocution, Rhetoric and Oratory Collection. This collection has been identified as a priority due to anticipated use, so Pat and Anca will be focusing on this material in the coming months.

TRI

Anca cataloged a new collection of 20th century scripts for the French Theatre Script Collection and began work on upgrading records for some bound volumes of French plays. Joan completed work on the bulk of the Twyla Tharp collection, and so will began working at TRI on Thursday again. Joan also cataloged for several other TRI collections.

Other

GAA Sang Kyo spent several weeks concentrating on Korean language materials for the main library collection. These statistics are recorded for the Cataloging Department.

Non-MARC

Collection Management System (CMS)

PastPerfect had been selected by Special Collections as their CMS in summer 2007. Morag is the project manager of implementation of the product. The software was purchased and delivered in March. With the support of the Web Implementation Team, the software is now installed and available for use. In the next few weeks the first of ten currently identified data sources will be converted and the first users will be brought online.

EAD

Morag attended the March 28 Ohio Digitization Interest Group which introduced the OhioLINK EAD tool in anticipation of its release in April.

Digitization Projects

Morag is working with Melanie Schlosser (SRI) to develop METS/MODS for the Enich slide collection from Hilandar. Scanning is now underway.

Morag and Nataliya met with a group preparing a project on the emigration of Ukrainians to Columbus that will be contributed to the Knowledge Bank. When the project is ready for metadata creation, Nataliya looks forward to participating.

Morag also provided advice to the Byrd Polar Center on metadata for their Media Manager pilot project.

Professional Development
