SPECIAL   COLLECTIONS   CATALOGING   (SCCAT)

Special Collections Cataloging Department
Quarterly Report: January - March 2007

CGA

Mary began working on new backlog books at CGA. The comics cataloger had made excellent progress during her absence, and is current with comic books and working on replacing old short records. Manga cataloging continued. Anca cataloged foreign language comics as well.

CHA

Mary resumed work on NACO headings for Charvat authors, and finished several small projects begun last year on the collection. Joan continued training on name headings for the project, as well as continuing book cataloging.

HIL

Nataliya cataloged Slavic microfiche materials that were moved from the Main Library Microfiche Collection to Hilandar in years past. Many of these had only short records in the catalog. It was not always clear if the copies in Hilandar were added copies or the “copy 1” listed in the catalog, so Nataliya spent a great deal of time verifying holdings in the microfiche collection and Hilandar. This work will continue for some time.

RARE

Pat cataloged materials from the Lillian Schwartz, Sam Hamill, and John Heintz, M.D. Africa gift collections. In addition he cataloged some William Jones UFO materials as well as old backlogs (items relating to Winston Churchill and 1920's-30's political pamphlets) while also dealing with some maintenance problems. He will complete the last few boxes of the Early Paperback collection, in addition to solving problems from the last of Angelica’s cataloging.

Anca cataloged orders and books from the Steven Cox collection.

TRI

Joan cataloged articles by Jarka Burian (in-analytics and offprints) as well as the regular flow of new books, French and Dramatists series. She also cataloged material from the Lawrence W. Kuhl , Elsie Janis and Guthheil collections. The latter two collections received collection-level records so that the boxes could be barcoded. She used her experience with Charvat name headings to create NACO headings for materials from TRI, as well.

Anca began cataloging the Dance Notation Bureau Collection, including all the books in Hugarian, requiring original cataloging. She also worked on a plan to catalog the entire multi-format collection.

Other

Beth worked with Henry Griffy (SRI) to revise and simplify the procedure for compiling monthly statistics. She also worked with Rebekah Kilzer to improve the display of archival and manuscript records in the web opac, with a practicum student to catalog star charts from SEL, and with a group from CGA to explore issues with a shared collections management database for special collections.
