SPECIAL   COLLECTIONS   CATALOGING   (SCCAT)

Special Collections Cataloging Department
Quarterly Report: October - December 2006

The move to offices on Ackerman Road kicked off this quarter, along with the expected problem-solving and getting settled. Several members of the department were on leave or vacation, as well.

An ongoing project is the continued need to edit URLs in special collections records to reflect documents moved with the website move, this quarter for collections in CGA and Archives. More are in the works as time permits.

CGA

Manga and comic book cataloged continued.

CHA

Joan began working with Stephanie Gilchrist on BIBCO records in order to keep the workflow going. She is also working with Noelle Van Pulis and Andrea Moore on creating name authority records for simple names.

HIL

Nataliya cataloged nineteenth century materials in Serbian, Bulgarian and Church Slavic. Most of the items needed original records; some were “bound-withs,” so she was trained on these by Pat. In December, she began adding author names and chapter titles as local added entries as requested by Hilandar staff, and continues to catalog Russian microfiches.

Pat also trained her on moving item records between bibs and marking records for deletion. He also checked her original records and answered ongoing questions.

RARE

Pat cataloged items for the Irish, Avant Writing, Raymond Carver/Tess Gallagher, William E. Jones UFO, Peter D. Franklin Cookbook, Ann W. and Emanuel D. Rudolph, Sam Hamill, and Lillian Schwartz collections, along with John Heintz M.D. books about Africa gifts, new collection records, miscellaneous backlog, and returned problems. He resolved problems for Sang Kyo with the Sam Hamill (now over 1000 items on OSCAR) and Lillian Schwartz collections. Some maintenance work included updating collection records.

Anca attempted cataloging of the moved backlog materials from Rare, and completed about half of them. Interestingly, many of the books had rush streamers dated as far as 1950s.

TRI

Anca finished cataloging the Burian Collection, in Czech, Hungarian, and even Polish (books, serials, programs.) In all there are over 600 records; most required original cataloging.

Joan has been working on getting several boxed collections numbered and bar coded. This brought up the issue that TRI staff would like to change the display of “volume” information. Currently, it lists under “call number” in the public display. We will be investigating our options. Work continues on trying to get collections numbered and bar coded as they are done being input into the TRI data system, so that boxes will be prepared for the move.

Joan also cataloged Harold Eisenstein books, The Gone with the Wind collection, theses and the general flow of French and Dramatists series.
