SPECIAL   COLLECTIONS   CATALOGING   (SCCAT)

Special Collections Cataloging Department
Quarterly Report: October - December 2005

ARV

Beth cataloged new OSU oral histories, and passed information along for Knowledge Bank submission. This workflow appears to be going well.

CGA

Beth consulted at length with Amy McCrory and Susan Liberator about the catalog records for the Mendez collection. Since this collection underwent significant changes as it was processed, many bibliographic records were merged, updated, or overlaid to reflect this.

Pat created collection-level records and linked existing records as requested.

Mary began cataloging the Will Eisner and Avis Lang collections. She continued to cataloged gift receipts and miscellaneous collections. She also cataloged the first issue of serial titles so that students could add additional volumes.

We were dismayed to learn that moving to the new webserver at OIT made links from OSCAR records to CGA database results invalid. This resulted in out-of-date information being displayed. IT personnel will hopefully to able to add redirects to solve this problem without SCCAT staff having to edit all existing links in bibliographic records.

CHA

Joan created BIBCO records for Charvat (1926-1950) records as appropriate. She also cataloged non-BIBCO materials for the collection. Suzanne also cataloged titles for the Charvat project.

Joan began creating BIBCO records for Charvat project (1926-1950) records as appropriate. She also cataloged non-BIBCO materials for the collection. Suzanne also worked on Charvat, after refresher training with Mary.

Mary worked extensively on NACO, contributing over 40 new names. She also continued to check BIBCO records produced by Joan. Finally, she cataloged miscellaneous materials discovered in preparation for the move, which were passed on by Charvat staff.

HIL

Suzanne cataloged Slavic materials from the E. Kasinec collection, including finishing off some problem titles. Hilandar cataloging was put on hold at the end of the year, with Suzanne’s retirement.

RARE

Anca created records for material identified by Elva for the move. Additionally, she cataloged material from the linguistics department that had been awaiting cataloging.

Beth created short collection level records for material (mostly from the Avant Writing Collection) managed by John Bennett, so that these boxes could be sent to storage.

Our new GAA, Sang Kyo Lee, is now cataloging cookbooks from the Peter D. Franklin and Margaret Sila Barres collections.

We discovered additional materials (not originating from Rare Books) that have been designated with STX3 (and sometimes, STX5) locations. This means that while we had completed recataloging or reclassification of all EL and AH materials, there is now additional material with these classifications in STX3 and STX5 locations. We have no plans to systematically reclassify these materials until after the move.

Pat continued cataloging diverse backlogs for Rare and Charvat, including materials from the Irish collection, Avant Writing collection, William E. Jones UFO collection, Karen Harper gifts, science fiction paperbacks, Brion Gysin acquistions, etc. Also, he recataloged items returned from STX that did not have bib records on OSCAR. He also assisted in training and problem-solving for the new GAA.

TRI

Anca cataloged French play “bound-with” volumes, and is nearly finished with this batch, which was discovered in the Rare backlog. She assisted Nena with research, identifying designs, and correspondence regarding a well-known Romanian stage designer and director who lives in the UK, and who donated about one hundred designs to TRI.

Suzanne began work on a collection of Czech theatre materials, in addition to continuing to work on the designs.

Beth worked extensively with Nancy Helmick and Nena Couch to further the circulation of TRI materials using OSCAR. She ran a Boolean report to catch those materials whose status had incorrectly been updated over the course of the year. She also developed detailed handouts for creating patron records and for creating bibliographic and item records on the fly, and trained TRI staff in these procedures.

Joan cataloged and prepared for STX over 250 boxes of Los Angeles Theater Collection materials. She also cataloged a few small donor collections of four or five boxes each, several volumes of bound-with plays, and on ongoing French and Dramatists collections and miscellaneous high priority items.

Other activities:

Mary Harris prepared and presented training on Connexion 1.5 for technical services staff. SCCAT attended this training.

Beth evaluated two librarians at other institutions for promotion and tenure purposes.
