SPECIAL   COLLECTIONS   CATALOGING   (SCCAT)

Special Collections Cataloging Department
Quarterly Report: April - June 2006

SCCAT welcomed a new staff member, Nataliya Oliynyk. Katie Norton finished her practicum project, a collection analysis report for the renovated Special Collections. Beth continued working on resolving problems with strange incorrect itypes found in special collections records. Mary spent two weeks on jury duty.

ARV

Beth created a collection record for the Glenn artifacts collection.

CGA

Beth worked with Nancy Helmick to plan for implementing Millennium circulation for CGA, including updating tables and records. Mary resolved problems discovered in a shelf-reading project, and continued to assist Mayumi with manga cataloging questions.

CHA

Joan and Mary continued progress on the Charvat (1926-1950) materials, including many NACO authority records and BIBCO contributions. Mary also worked with Nataliya, training her to do project cataloging. Sang Kyo began assisting by searching materials from 30 boxes of backlog that were sent to the Depository.

HIL

Nataliya began working with Hilandar materials, searching and identifying records. By the end of the period, she was creating original records for Hilandar books, monographic series, and serials. She cataloged materials from the E. Kasinec book collection, the Jaksa and Biljana Djelevich Serbian Library, and current purchases. She also participated in the Medieval Slavic Summer Institute 2006 at Hilandar Research Library, attending lectures and seminars on Slavic paleography, terminology, manuscript readings, etc.

RARE

Beth created records for dozens of manuscripts from the cage – some were temporary short records but some were complete. These materials will be reviewed after the move for rehousing and recataloging.

Pat mostly cataloged materials for Rare Books, including items for the Irish and Avant Writing collections. He continued to problem-solve and resolve materials sent back from the Depository because of missing records, no barcodes, or similar problems. He created about one hundred collection-level records (some on OCLC) for collections that will be processed after the move. He also assisted in training Nataliya by answering questions and providing guidance.

Sang Kyo cataloged current acquisitions for Charvat.

TRI

Joan finished sending boxes of a collection from Bowling Green University to the Depository. She also worked on the Touring Company Script Collection, current Dramatists and French receipts, and the Alvin H. Reiss music scores collection.

Staff from the department attended several events: a workshop on thinking differently about grants, the lecture by David Carr, and CPR training.

Beth attended the RBMS Preconfence “Libraries, Archives, and Museums in the 21st Century: Intersecting Missions, Converging Futures?” and the ALA Annual Meeting.
