Time Line of Human Civilization (Choose "Timeline of Time")
From 1,200,000,000 B.C. to 1999. Calls itself " very abridged" Timeline. Gives one key event, development, or discovery for each date. For the prehistoric period, dates cover groups of years or periods, but after this time, dates may vary from entries decades apart to year- by-year entries. Worth looking at to identify key events and developments.

World History: 3,000Years of World History 
This site presents history from approximately 1,000 B.C. to the present in the form of charts and maps. Events are presented in chronological chart form, and the "people" option is shown in the form of a chronological chart of contemporaries. Maps cover different periods and movements in history such as the spread of Islam, barbarian invasions, etc.

Web Chronology Project
Has general world chronology, regional, and cultural chronologies including major religions. Covers 5,000,000 to 1989. Often has many layers where you progress down to very detailed chronologies, sometimes year by year. Click on many events and developments to get substantial description. Western Civilization
Excellent source for detailed chronological study of history.

Christy's Garden of History and Timelines
This useful series of timelines covers world history from the ancient period to 1997. Gives assortment of major events for dates and emphasizes people. A merit is that it attempts to cover year by year. Also has an assortment of other timelines.

Chronologies by Broad Period of History

EAWC Chronology
This chronology of the ancient world is linked to essays and images and arranged by area of the world including the Near East, India, Egypt, China, Greece, Rome, Early Islam, and Medieval Europe, and a global chronology. A chronology for a region is given with descriptions of events for each date and sometimes with links to pictures and essays.

Medieval Timeline
This excellent chronology is virtually day by day from 900 to 1400 A.D. Events and names are clickable and give detailed descriptions. Also available at this amazing one-stop site are maps, genealogical charts, lists of places with pictures - castles, cathedrals, etc. And it round it off, all people's names in the chronology are clickable and and also approachable through an alphabetical list. This site should be an award-winner for giving quick understanding of this period of history.

Renaissance and Reformation Chronology
This chronology covers 1260 to 1648, often year by year. Usually gives one major event for a date. Does not have links.

Eighteenth Century Chronology
This chronology covers 1660 through 1800 with year-by-year dates. Clicking on a year yields major events and developments in a number of different fields.

History by Time Period
Has links to Ancient History, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 20th century history, and also links to Middle Ages, Renaissance, and other timelines.

 

Chronologies by Day of the Week

Today in History: Daily Almanac
This chronology presents a large number of entries for any one day of the year, including, births, events, and deaths from around 1000 A.D. to the present.

This Day in History
This site links to a good selection of day-of-the-month chronologies and has links to a wide variety of other day-of-the-month calendars, such as literary calendars. 

Any Day in History
Covering A.D. to the present which gives births, deaths, and events on any particular day of any year. A good day-of-the- month chronology.

Today in History
Covering A.D. to the present which gives births, deaths, and events on any particular day of any year.

 

Metasites

Chronologies of a particular type can be found on the Internet by a search using Metacrawler or some other search engine. Enter the subject or area and "chronologies." - for example, "Egypt chronologies," or "Egypt timelines." Perhaps a faster way is to find a desired chronology by using the metasites below which collect links to all types of chronologies. Also, the most comprehensive chronologies are often found in print form. For access to these, click on "More Options" below.

Chronologies
 This site is by far the most comprehensive and lists more than 8 pages of chronologies covering hundreds of sites. Chronologies are arranged in sections of general world, by continent, by subject, U.S. general, and U.S. by decade. The last word in locating a useful chronology.

Alternatime
Provided here is a list of chronologies or timelines grouped in history and culture, science and technology, art and literature, popular culture and current events, and science fiction.

Timelines, and Dynastic Tables
Sections here link to general timelines, military history timelines and a very useful list of timelines by country or region. Perhaps the best part are the dynastic or genealogical tables for famous rulers and person in history which are often needed for use with timelines.
