General Recommendations

Mark Kantrowitz (www.findaid.org) and Steven R. Knowlton (The New York Times, November 19, 1998, D10) both caution against the following practices: Charging fees (even small fees) for scholarships, + Guaranteeing scholarships, + Offering to write the application essay, + Doing most or all of the work, + Making exaggerated claims about the amount of scholarships available. + Additonally, Kantrowitz lists 20 more warning signs. Knowlton takes the conservative step of recommending only the federal sites, while Kantrowitz recommends others.
