an excellent and comprehensive guide. 

Government Information Sharing  
An easy-to-use site providing population and demographic data from the 1990 Census. Covers U.S., states, counties, cities (defined as within city limits) and all town and villages, MA's, and tracts. Does not cover urbanized areas, blocks, or zip codes.

Census Lookup
 Provides same data as is available on Census CD-ROMs with the exception of urbanized areas. This site includes U.S., states. cities, counties, MA's (metropolitan areas), tracts, block groups, and zip code areas.

American Factfinder (Official Census Site)
Census data should be available here for all geographical areas. Choose Detailed Tables and scroll down to 1990 Detailed Census Tables.

World Population

International Demographic Data  
Includes population size of every country and territory in the world for 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, 1990, and most recent figures. This site is provided by the Census Bureau.

Population Reference Bureau
"Provides information on population and population growth around the world. World Population Data Sheet "includes demographic indicators for the world, world regions, and more than 190 countries. Additional data for the world and world regions are provided including birth rates, death rates, natural increase, infant mortality, total fertility, population doubling time and projections, percent of population under age 15 and over 65, life expectancy by gender, percent urban, percent of women ages 15-19 giving birth each year, percent using contraception, and per capita GNP."(Researcher's Guide to Population Information Web Sites).

World Population Trends (United Nation's POPIN)
"Urban, regional, national and worldwide population trends estimated by UN agencies. Provides data on mortality, age-specific fertility rates, demographic impact of AIDS, historical world population growth, international migration, abortion policies, world population mile-stones, populations or urban areas, and women." ( Researcher's Guide to Population Information Web Sites).

Popline  
OSU Libraries' networked database. Covers 1927 to the present. Provides 200,000 citations from journals, monographs, and technical reports for information on population, family planning, and related health issues around the world. See also "Population Index" by Princeton University

Demography & Population Studies: The World Wide Web Virtual Library
Keeps track of valuable sites in demography. Lists other virtual libraries on population subjects and places such as epidemiology, environment, Hong Kong, India, etc. Also gives links to worldwide census information, special online data centers, population institutes and associations, electronic journals of use to demographers, historical demographic resources, and e-mail discussion lists.

Center for Demography and Ecology (University of Wisconsin-Madison)
Has useful links to online information connections and data.

PopNet (Population Reference Bureau)
A comprehensive directory of population-related Web sites from governments, international organizations, nongovernmental organizations, university centers, and associations. May be searched by topic or keyword, organization, or world region. The sites are categorized under population topics such as demographic statistics, economics, environment, gender, and reproductive health.
