How to Find Census Materials from
the 1990 Census of Population and Housing in Electronic Form. This
page doesn't get updated anymore. Some links will no longer be available,
because they are replaced with the more current 2000 Census information.
The purpose of this guide is to assist users who need or want Census
data in electronic form.
The guide does not attempt to correlate all electronic and print Census
materials for the 1990 Census of Population and Housing. Instead, it
attempts to point out only those materials that we have found to be readily
available in electronic form, either on the Internet or on non-networked CD-
ROMs. Each day brings changes and new initiatives on the part of the Census
Bureau, national associations, and private firms. Census materials from the
1990 Census are appearing on the Internet in many places, and with
increasing frequency. We hope to keep up with these changes and modify this
guide accordingly.
However, some 1990 information can be found only in print materials and
often print materials provide the quickest and best approach. Ask at the
Main Library Reference desk for more information on printed materials and
the information to be found there.

Maps (Choose "Reference Maps" from "Maps"). This
site says that maps may be obtained for States, Counties, Cities,
Metropolitan Areas (MA's), Urbanized Areas, Townships, Towns, Tracts,
Block Groups, Congressional Districts, and American Indian Areas.
Potential problems with "Reference Maps"
- Be sure that no more than one area is selected at a time. If you
want to start a new area, click on all dots to "clear"
previous selection. Be patient, as you may have to wait between
steps.

- Select "Block Groups"
- Click on plus to initiate action
- Select desired Block Group and click on "view" to
left of screen.
- However, while these maps will give boundaries and numbers such
as Tract numbers, they do not appear to provide street names. In
order to interpret boundaries, you may need a street map of the
corresponding area. For this, try the
Maps
and Directions or MapQuest.
Finding Tract and Block Group Numbers
- There are several methods to find the number of the tract you want.
- Franklin County, Columbus, and Ohio
- Come to the Main Library Reference Area. There is a large map
of Columbus with tracts posted on the wall. We also have
available in the Reference Office tract and block maps for Ohio.
We also have a Census Tract Street Locator for Franklin County
in print form on the Reference Desk Census Shelf. You can look
up a particular address and see what tract it is in.
- All Tracts in Other U.S. States
- Use the Census
Tract Locator available from CENSTATS.(You may also use this
for Ohio if desired). You must enter a zip code and the first
letters of a street in the area of the tract you wish to study.
You will be given a list of tract areas and can select the one
desired. You can also enter a specific address and find out the
tract number.
- The Census Tract Street Locator is also available on CD-ROM.
Ask for it at the Main Library Microforms desk.
- Census Tract Maps in Print and Microfiche
- Ohio
- Maps of Ohio Tracts are available in the Reference Office
on the Office Census Shelf. A large Tract map of Franklin
County is posted on the wall near the Reference Office.
- Other States
- Tract maps for other states are on microfiche. Go to Main
Library Microforms to the microfiche ASI set at HA203A196.
Look in the drawer for 1993 at No. 2551-10. Tract maps can
also be found online at American
Factfinder, as described above..
-
- Block Groups Maps in Print
- Block Group maps down to the individual Block level with
street names, for the Columbus MSA (Franklin, Delaware,
Fairfield, Licking, and Madison County) are in Steve's office.
These are the only Block Group and Individual Block maps
available in paper format.
- Blocks - Individual Block maps
- A large Individual Block map with Block numbers for Franklin
County can be found on the wall near the Reference Office. This
map is hard to use because of lack of street names. A better
option is the Block Group maps mentioned above for Franklin,
Delaware, Fairfield, Licking, and Madison County. These go down
to the Individual Block level and have street names. For other
areas, a special program is being purchased by Steve Rogers.
