Datasets of Statistics from ICPSR

Guide to Resources and Services Main Reference Z7165.U5I64
The Inter-university Consortium for Political and Social Research maintains a large library of electronic datasets for use in academic research. We are affiliated with this organization. Our contact is now through the Political Research Laboratory (292-1061). This important catalog by ICPSR describes all the available datasets. The Consortium obtains, on a regular basis, electronic versions of over 90 statistical serial publications or surveys, many of them international. The holdings also include in electronic form, many one-time surveys or publications. The areas covered in general are Census, community and urban studies, conflict, aggression, violence, wars, economic behavior and attitudes, education, elites and leadership, geography and environment, governmental structures, policies, and capabilities, health care, international systems, legal systems, legislative bodies, political behavior and attitudes, organizational behavior, social indicators, social institutions and behavior including minorities, religion, socialization and youth, age, crime, leisure, vital statistics, family, gender, and military service.

The introduction to this guide states "ICPSR data collections are now distributed on desktop media, including diskette, CD-ROM, and network file transfer. Essentially all of ICPSR's holdings are available for electronic retrieval.

The best policy is to contact the ICPSR official representative, which in our case is the Political Research Laboratory (292-1061). ICPSR now allows datafiles to be directly downloaded from the ICPSR Website and also in some cases allows individuals to be members.

Many datasets are not in usable form and the Political Research Laboratory will clean and prepare the data to make it usable and then put it on CD-ROMs for patrons. ."

Visit the ICPSR Website and search the newest version of the Guide to Resources and Services: http://www.icpsr.umich.edu Choose "Archives" and then "Access Holdings."

The Political Research Laboratory turnaround time may be as short as several days if the dataset is available in their in-house library. If it is not available locally, there may be some time associated with preparing it for use. If a patron locates the exact dataset wanted from the ICPSR Guide above and it has to be ordered electronically, the time may be 1 week to 10 days, after which time the patron will probably receive a disk with the dataset.
