The study begins with a survey of general and infant mortality trends in the U.S.S.R. and provides an assessment of the characteristics and availability of Soviet statistics. The report examines possible causes of Soviet infant mortality and of its recent rise, including demographic, social, economic, environmental, and medical factors. The report analyzes the impact of changes in five demographic variables, evaluates factors which adversely affect the health of pregnant women and of infants, and assesses the effectiveness of the Soviet health system in coping with these threats to health. 36 pages. For various years 1988 through 2020, tables show, by country, age groups of all persons 55 years and over. For the years 1969 to 1984, tables also give statistics on urban and rural population cross-classified by sex and older age groups. The report contains information on such social and economic characteristics as the marital status of the older population, educational attainment, labor force participation rates, and workers in major occupational categories. Graphs and tables also suggest the burden of support for the elderly in various developing countries. Geography: Selected countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Caribbean.
