This series represents a continuation of Series MP with the individual release numbers continued in sequence. MP: Special Reports on Patients in Mental Institutions
Reports presenting preliminary statistics on the characteristics of patients admitted to and separated from mental institutions, on the number of inmates, and on the size and characteristics of the staff of mental institutions.
Each report 4 pages. Reports numbered 1-6 were issued prior to 1946; reports 7-11, issued 1946; reports 12-13, issued 1947; reports 14-18, issued 1947 in series P-85, Mental Institutions, annual reports titled Patients in Mental Institutions, for 1943, 1944, 1945, 1946, issued separately (without series identification number), 1946, 1947, 1948, and 1949, respectively. The identification of this series was changed to P-85, Mental Institutions, in 1947 with the individual release numbers continued in sequence. Preparation and publication of the reports on patients in mental institutions was transferred to the Public Health Services of the Federal Security Agency in 1947.

This report provides estimates for the first admissions of psychotics in the United States during the war years, 1940 to 1945. The estimates are only for the first admissions with psychosis and do not cover first admissions for psychoneurosis nor those diagnosed as with marginal disorders such as alcoholism or drug addictions. Data in this report are shown for the United States, 1940 to 1945, by age and sex, for estimated psychotic first admissions per 100,000 of the population, to state, veterans', county and city, and private hospitals for mental diseases, and estimated psychotic first admissions to hospitals for the permanent care of psychiatric patients, by type of hospital. Data are also shown for estimated and reported psychotic first admissions to hospitals for the permanent care of psychotic patients, by type of hospital, and estimate components, 1940 to 1945. 6 pages. | December 1947 |
