THE THOMAS L. TAYLOR PAPERS:
GUIDE AND INVENTORY
SPEC.CMS.97

(The Avant Writing Collection
Guide Compiled by John M. Bennett)

The Rare Books and Manuscripts Library
The Ohio State University Libraries

INTRODUCTION

Thomas L. Taylor was born in San Diego, California in 1938. His father was a career naval officer stationed in Pearl Harbor in 1941, and TLT has sketchy memories of the attack that year on the navy base. Like many military families, the Taylors moved around a lot during TLT’s childhood. TLT’s literary activities began in earnest in the 1960’s, when he was a teacher of English, literature, and writing in several locations. He has written fairly steadily ever since. To make a living, he has worked as a house painter in the 1970’s, a secretary in a university in the 1980’s, and again as a house painter in the 1990’s. He often writes and publishes under the name Anabasis.

TLT has been a prolific writer for whom writing is among other things a form of meditation or a process of consciousness. (It is perhaps significant that throughout his papers, especially in the earlier years, may be found I Ching hexagrams he has noted in margins, on manuscripts, etc.) The highly unique and innovative nature of his work has led to its being widely known and admired, especially in circles of avant garde and experimental poets and writers, even though he had not published much until the 1990’s. Throughout his career, he corresponded and exchanged poems and texts with many people through the mail, and when his work was published in magazines and the like, it stood out and was noticed. Starting in the 1990’s much of his work has come into print, some of it published by his own Anabasis Press. Among his works are The One, the Same and the Other, Daily Logs, Relimn, Horndog, Das Maarchen, Kilobyte Magnificat, and others. He also edited the influential anthologies The ?Why? Project, The Love Project, and The Vision Project.

For many years he has been a prolific photographer, frequently combining literary texts with photographs in his books and manuscripts. In recent years, he has made a good deal of visual poetry as well, using calligraphy, computer techniques, drawing, and photography. His interest in drawing can be seen very early in the many mandala and other drawings produced from the very beginning of his creative activities.

TLT’s autobiography, “Really, All My Life Has Been Autobiography” was published in volume 26 of Contemporary Authors Autobiography Series, 1997, and may be found in these papers in box 26, folder 169, and in box 87.

This collection includes manuscripts, correspondence (both postal and electronic), files for his editorial and book projects, photographs, drawings, sketchbooks and notebooks, family records and photographs, publications, books and serials he owned, personal records and documents, and much other material. The materials are not arranged in chronological or subject order, but are in the order they were in when received by OSU. Thus files pertaining to TLT’s book The One, the Same and the Other, for example, are to be found throughout the collection, perhaps reflecting TLT’s practice of working on his books over many years. Groups of manuscripts and other materials that I have placed in the numbered folders were originally found in marked or unmarked folders, between such folders, or otherwise grouped together.

Among the writers TLT corresponded or collaborated with, and who are represented by material in this collection, are Vincent Ferrini, Susan Smith Nash, Jessica Freeman, Jake Berry, John M. Bennett, Jim Leftwich, Sheila E. Murphy, Dan Raphael, Stephen Ellis, Peter Ganick, Joseph Torra, John Byrum, Harry Polkinhorn, Spencer Selby, Gregory Vincent Saint Thomasino, and many others.

The bulk of TLT’s materials here are from the period 1968-2000, with some earlier family documents and photos going back as far as ca.1905.

Personal names and titles may have multiple forms due to changes in usage, or differences in how they were recorded in the papers. When doing keyword or similar searches, it is a good idea to search a name or title in a variety of forms.
