SHEILA E. MURPHY POETRY COLLECTION:
GUIDE AND INVENTORY
SPEC.CMS.92

(Compiled by Beverly Carver and John M. Bennett)

INTRODUCTION

Sheila E. Murphy (Mishawaka, Indiana, 1951-) is a widely published innovative and experimental poet, who has lived for many years in Phoenix, Arizona. (An autobiography detailing her life and work was published in 1997 in the Contemporary Authors Autobiography series, vol. 26 [in folder 187 of this collection]). This collection documents Murphy's development into one of the United States' most widely-read and interesting innovative poets. In addition, its almost 130 items will serve as a valuable resource for research into the work and cultural context of many of her contemporaries.

The collection includes nearly all of Murphy's published work (spanning the years 1969 to 2000), in magazines, journals, newspapers, anthologies, broadsides, books, chapbooks, electronic publications (as print outs), and other formats. It also includes numerous reviews of and articles about, her work.

The collection is divided into two parts, each arranged in a separate alphabetical sequence, by title of book or magazine. Part one covers the years 1969-1998, with most material spanning 1980-1998. Part two covers the years 1990-2000, with most material spanning 1998- 2000.

Each entry includes the folder number, followed by the title of the book or magazine, volume and/or issue number (in the case of magazines), the year of publication, and the title of the book or of individual poems (in the case of magazines), plus any other pertinant information. Titles of books and chapbooks are in upper case.

Folder 1 contains Beverly Carver's original indexing of both parts of this collection, and includes for each entry additional information, such as the names of the editors of magazines or book publishers, addresses, and page numbers. Materials on Carver's list are generally in the same order as they are on this one, with some minor discrepancies.

The folders titled "File box" (cf. folder 2, for example) contain parts of the complete Carver list in folder 1, and indicate the contents of the individual shipping cartons as received by OSU Libraries.

I am grateful to Sarah Hogue for her careful assistance in preparing this guide.
