JOHN M. BENNETT PUBLICATIONS COLLECTION, 1940-1995:
GUIDE AND INVENTORY
SPEC.CMS.107

(Compiled by Andrew Harding, John M. Bennett, and Katie Brennan)

The Rare Books & MSS Library
The Ohio State University Libraries, 2005

INTRODUCTION

John M. Bennett [JMB] was born in Chicago, Illinois, October 12, 1942. A life-long poet, his work started to become well-known in the 1970s.Since that time, he has become one of the worlds best-known avant-garde and experimental poets. He has worked in a wide variety of genres, including text, visual poetry, graphics, sound and performance poetry, mail art, film and media, and has collaborated with other writers and artists from around the globe. He was also editor of the international literary journal Lost and Found Times, 1975-2005. Richard Kostelanetz has said, John M. Bennett has been the seminal American poet of my generation because he has produced so much luminous work in a bewildering variety of experimental modes. Further biographic details may be found in his autobiography (Contemporary Authors Autobiography Series, Detroit: Gale, v. 25, 1996 PN771C744).

A complete bibliographic log also may be consulted; it is cataloged in three parts:

Bibliography of John M. Bennett: books, chapbooks, audio, film & video, articles, reviews, etc., 1999 - PS3552E555Z8B45 1999

Bibliography of John M. Bennett: poems, visual poems, graphics, translations, etc. in magazines, anthologies, & catalogs, 1999 - PS3552E555Z8B453 1999

No s cul de los dos escribe esta pgina. - Jorge Luis Borges, from his story Borges y Yo.

The collection originated due to a mental peculiarity on the part of its compiler, John M. Bennett [JMB]. I/he has had a feeling for as long as he/I can remember that I/he didnt really exist, that he/I was invisible. As a result, I/he felt compelled to retain at least one copy of everything that documented the contrary, that a person named John M. Bennett did exist, at least on paper. This feeling probably accounts, at least in part, for why he/I began writing in the first place.

One of the forms that invisible feeling took was that I/he felt like a mirror: no person, just a mirror in which others saw themselves. So his/my poems became those mirrors, and gave them a more solid, concrete existence.

This collection, then, consists of at least one copy of everything I/he could put his/my hands on that contains published work I/he created, reviews and mentions of his/my work and life, mail art project and exhibition documentations and catalogs, announcements, ephemera, and much else.

==

The collection contains a nearly comprehensive gathering of his publications through the year 1995.It is arranged chronologically by years, but not necessarily chronologically within each year. The oversize and miscellaneous boxes at the end (boxes 178-184, 192-193) are not in chronological order and include material that did not fit in the main collection. It includes publications and other material, and some correspondence and manuscripts.

The collection also includes an effectively complete collection of JMBs Luna Bisonte Prods imprints from the early 1970s through 2000. This is the Luna Bisonte Prods Archive, boxes 185-191. Some earlier JMB imprints, such as his Frustration Press, may be found elsewhere in the collection, mixed in with the chronological arrangement.

The collection will be of value not only for studying the work of JMB, but for exploring the work of many of the writers and artists who frequently appeared in the same venues, as well as the worlds of underground, small press, mail art, and alternative cultures for the years covered. In searching for particular names, it is important to search the names in multiple forms, as so often a persons name (or the name of a publication) will appear in multiple forms throughout his or her career. For example, Thomas L. Taylor also appears as Tom Taylor, or Thomas Taylor, and so on, in addition to any pseudonyms he may have used, such as Eagle. JMBs serial, Lost and Found Times, also appears as Lost & Found Times, L&FT, and so on.

The abbreviation ts in this guide refers both to typescript and to any text set in type, to distinguish it from a visual poem.

There are some 4200 folders in 193 boxes in this collection. I want to thank my assistants Andrew Harding and Katie Brennan who labored over these materials for several years, and Geoffrey D. Smith, Head of the Rare Books & Manuscripts Library who welcomed this strange collection into the Library. Thanks go also to the RBMS Librarys staff, Elva Griffith and Jim Smith, who have been of invaluable assistance on many occasions.
