Music/Dance Library - Finding sound recordings
Where do I look?
Sound recordings are located in the Music and Dance Library Media Center. To search our collection, follow these steps:
- First, try the OSU Library Catalog.
It contains entries for most of our LPs and all of our
compact discs.
- Next, try the card catalog located in the Media Center. It itemizes a large collection of LPs not found in the OSU Library Catalog.
- If you can't find what you need, ask any
staff person for assistance.
You can find recordings in various ways:
Types of Online Catalog Searches and Examples
- By composer (AUTHOR search) Example: Copland, Aaron
- By "unique" title (TITLE or WORDS search) Examples: Rodeo or Billy the Kid (not generic titles like Symphony no. 1 or Concerto in D)
- By type/form of composition (SUBJECT search) Examples: Sonatas or Operas
- By instrumentation (SUBJECT or WORDS search) Example: Flute and guitar music
- By performers (AUTHOR search) Examples: Robert Shaw Chorale or Pittsburgh Symphony or Horowitz, Vladimir
Tip: You can narrow any online-catalog search to sound recordings by performing an AUTHOR, TITLE, SUBJECT, or WORDS search, and then choosing the LIMIT option and selecting MATERIAL TYPE, then MUSIC RECORD, and FIND.
Call numbers of recordings
- Recordings with LP3- or LP4- call numbers are compact discs. CDs may be checked out for 7 days by anyone with a current OSU ID.
- Recordings with LP0-, LP1-, LPR-, and manufacturer (RCA-, EMI-, etc.) call numbers are
vinyl LPs, which you can listen to in the
Media Center.
