Select three scholarly journals in your area of interest —
journals you might wish to submit articles to. You are free to choose as your "area of interest"
another instrument than the one you major in, or another topic. If you are a singer, you might want to choose three journals having to do with the organ or maybe woodwinds. If you're an oboist, you might find it interesting to choose three journals about musicology or about the piano or percussion. If you're majoring in conducting, why not try three journals having to do with the harpsichord? In short, you need not stick to your own field —
though you're free to do so if you want to.
In each journal, find the "directions to contributors."
Write a citation for each journal, giving the following information:
(1) Title of journal (in italics or underlined)
(2) Volume number and date
(3) Page number of the "directions to contributors" instructions
Are contributors required to use a style manual? If so, which? If not, state that none was specified.
Read an article from one of your three journals and practice writing your first article citation and abstract. Your citation must use the forms given in the Chicago Manual of Style 15th ed. (chapter 17) or Turabian, A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses, and Dissertations, 7th ed. Your abstract should be based on "How to Write a RILM Abstract", by Barbara Dobbs Mackenzie.
