Ohio State Pioneers Oral History DVD

Dr. Raimund Goerler, University Archivist, announced today that The Ohio State University has released an oral history digital video disc (DVD). The DVD provides two hours of video and documentation pertaining to the remembrances and views of Dr. Richard Armitage during his multiple careers (1939-1978) as student, professor, Dean of the Graduate School, Chairman of the Athletic Council, Vice President Student Affairs, and university ombudsman. This DVD appears to be the first use of this technology in an oral history project.

The DVD is part of the oral history program of The Ohio State University Archives to interview people, most of whom are retired and were in positions to observe or participate in the development of Ohio State. Volunteers, many from the OSU Retirees Association, have worked with the OSU Archives to plan and conduct the interviews. More than 50 persons have been interviewed including former presidents, administrators, faculty and staff. These interviews have resulted in conventional audiocassettes and transcripts. Dr. William Studer, emeritus professor and former director of University Libraries, coordinates the program.

The DVD format enriches and expands Ohio State's oral history program. In addition to the formal interview, the DVD contains scenes of the University, photographs of people and events, and documents cited by Vice President Armitage. According to Goerler, "One of the principal benefits of using DVD technology in preserving the university's history lies in the powerful educational capabilities of digital video disks. It's clear that DVD based historic materials will prove especially useful in presenting the historic events in the history of this university." Viewers can select the "chapters" they wish to view, which are arranged in three general headings in the Armitage DVD: Academics (linguistics career, language professor, textbook, academic outreach, academic background, academic legacy, language at OSU); Administration (President Fawcett, Graduate School, Student Affairs, Anvil & Bellows Club, Ombudsman); and Athletics (Athletic Council, Woody Hayes, Bowl Games, 1976 Michigan Game, Athletic Director Hugh Hindman, Athletic Issues). Complementing this DVD are a videotape, audio cassettes, and a transcript.

As a concept and as a product, the oral history DVD developed from the initiative of a special group of volunteers, who are alumni or friends of the University: William M. Moore, M.D and two OSU alumni, Richard K. Patterson (Engineering) and Robert W. Butche, (Fisher College) who is the historian-producer. The producers used digital cameras and editing equipment and software to capture the interview with Dr. Armitage and publish the DVD. ImageStream Studios USA provided the principal funding and production support.

These volunteers and ImageStream Studios are already at work developing another oral history DVD, which will focus on Professor Charles Csuri. As the pioneer in computer-based imaging and animation, Csuri has had an extra-ordinary impact on the use of computers in communication and art. This will be an intellectually and technologically challenging project and will include computer specific features such as still images, documents, tables, and audio only streams.

Photographs of Richard Armitage and Charles Csuri are available.
