An item on the John Glenn Papers in the University Archives was featured in the Saturday, September 6, 2003 edition of @OhioState, an online publication that gives the latest news and information for alumni and friends of the Ohio State University. Below is the text of the article: The John Glenn Archives, located at the University Archives, have opened to public research of the papers of former United States Senator and noted astronaut John Glenn. A four-year project to process and catalog the papers culminated in July with the online mounting of an extensive finding aid to both the Senate papers and the non-Senate papers portions of the archives. The finding aid contains detailed information about the scope and content of the papers and provides researchers with the ability to perform key word searches of the collection. Another feature of the aid enables a researcher to browse through headings of the thousands of folders located within the collection's box and folder inventory. Magda El-Sherbini, Vera Enesey, Stephanie Nicol, and Shirley Rhea, in the Cataloging department in Technical Services, along with Mary Harris in Special Collections cataloging- will receive Spot Bonus Awards for their participation in BIBCO. Magda's staff went through an extensive two-day training period so they could start contributing records to BIBCO based on their experience and on the quality of cataloging they do. In addition, they will be serving as trainers for other catalogers in technical services. This is a very important international cooperative project and will reflect very well on the Ohio State University Libraries' cataloging. BIBCO participation came about as a result of a recommendation of the "Cataloging Interfaces Working Group," chaired by Magda who says, "I am personally very excited that we have succeeded with this important new initiative despite the heavy work load and minimum staffing in the department." The participating catalogers in this program all deserve special commendation and recognition for their achievement and commitment to carry OSU Libraries to this new level, making the University Libraries comparable to our peer institutions. Magda El-Sherbini, likewise, is to be commended for her initiative, leadership, and follow through. Congratulations to each of our spot bonus winners. Chiquita Mullins Lee (mullins-lee.1@osu.edu) |

Rocki Strader, Electronic Resources Manager, Serials/Electronic Resources Department enrolled in the STEP program in May, 2002. She says, "I wanted as much information as I could get my hands on to help me be a better supervisor. Supervising is the hardest part of my job." Two courses were especially meaningful - "Public Universities, Private Lives?" and "Motivating through Empowerment." The public-versus-private course was a real eye-opener for Rocki. The course provided information about public records and what sorts of things should be documented and how. The motivating/empowerment course offered new ideas and a new perspective on enhancing employee performance. Rocki says, "I want to encourage the people I supervise and work with them in as many ways as I can." The STEP program made her more sensitive to the "people" part of her job and increased her awareness of the personnel issues and the kinds of questions to ask when she faces challenges. "I know that I don't have to reinvent the wheel," Rocki says. "Answers are out there." Marilyn Willhoff, Office Manager, Administrative Services, enrolled after she was rehired in 2000. She took the STEP courses in order to gain information on the variety of topics supervisors have to deal with. For Marilyn, all the courses were meaningful, but she especially benefited from the class on conducting effective performance reviews. Marilyn says, "The STEP program has helped me become a better supervisor. As a new supervisor it was beneficial to me when I had to do the yearly performance evaluations. All the classes provide excellent information to take with you. The handouts are great reference materials that you can refer to when you need them." Both Rocki and Marilyn encourage others to participate in STEP. Marilyn says, "I think the classes were enjoyable as well as great learning tools. Anyone who wants to be a better supervisor is encouraged to attend. You meet many people and find interesting ways to do your job better." Rocki says, "The University is a large system that actually works most of the time. This program helps you to understand it much better, so that if you feel that certain things have broken down, there are resources and solutions available. Even though it's targeted to supervisors, I'd recommend it to just about anybody." The STEP program is a valuable resource for University personnel. Instructors are knowledgeable about their subjects, and each class is composed of a mix of departments representing a range of interests across campus. Chiquita Mullins Lee (mullins-lee.1@osu.edu) |

In order to comply with University procedures, employees who are applying for listed vacancies must complete a Promotion/Transfer Request (form 8931, Rev 9/97) during the week of the first listing of the vacancy in the University Personnel Posting (green sheet). To ensure awareness of all vacancies which have been posted, applicants should consult the weekly green sheet rather than relying on the listing in NEWS NOTES Online and are encouraged to attach a resume and/or other supporting documents to the form. Prospective faculty and staff applicants who are absent during the five-day posting period and wish to apply should see Toni Morrison-Smith (morrison-smith.1@osu.edu) Library personnel may also review University employment opportunities at http://www.ohr.ohio-state.edu/index.htm |
