Grant for Lost and Found Times |
|
John M. Bennett, University Libraries (Rare Books & Special Collections Cataloging) has a received a grant from the Ohio Arts Council ($1200) to help with the publication of Lost and Found Times. Lost and Found Times is an international journal of avant-garde literatures, published since 1975, and edited by John M. Bennett. It includes texts, visual poetry, regular columns and a comic strip, and all kinds of new and unclassifiable writing and textual experimentation. It is distributed internationally, and is often described as one of the premier magazines in its field. It is certainly one of the longest-lived. It is collected in major libraries and art museums around the world. In 1998 an anthology of selected works from the first 39 issues was published by Invisible Books, London. Issues are $7.00 each; a subscription is $30.00 for 5 numbers. (Two numbers per year, generally.) Order from John M. Bennett, Luna Bisonte Prods, 137 Leland Ave., Columbus, OH 43214 USA |
A Note Of Thanks |
|
The Libraries would like to thank Charles Smith in Human Resources and Christina Moore in Cataloguing for holding up the banner for the Ohio State University Libraries. Charles and Christine represented the Libraries at the August Fund Drive for WOSU-TV on Saturday morning, August 10. They were on TV taking pledges with the best of them. We appreciate Charles and Christina's dedication and we hope other library employees will serve as volunteers during the upcoming pledge drive later this fall and winter. |

The 2nd Lecture in the Series:
Thursday, November 14, 2002
Featured Speaker:
Nicholson Baker, a noted novelist, is the author of Double Fold: Libraries and the Assault on Paper (Random House, 2001). Baker is also the founder and director of the American Newspaper Repository, created "to preserve and make available to the scholarly public, and to future generations," newspapers as landmarks of American publishing. Located in Rollinsford, New Hampshire and founded in 1999 as a non-profit organization, the American Newspaper Repository preserves and archives a unique collection of original newspapers that would otherwise have been destroyed or dispersed.

Director's Awards Recipients Selected |
|
Congratulations to Nick Felt, Monographs Department, and Patti Dittoe, Geology Library, on receiving the Director's Award from the Ohio State University Libraries. Director of Libraries Joseph Branin presented the awards to Nick and Patti on the first day of Staff Appreciation Week. Nominators throughout the Libraries acknowledged the outstanding performance of several staff members and recommended six nominees for this award. After much consideration, Patti and Nick were selected. After more than 27 years of continuous service, Nick has consistently exceeded the performance requirements of his job. He brings knowledge, productivity, and outstanding problem solving skills to his work, often combining speed and efficiency during project emergencies. He effectively manages special projects throughout the Libraries in areas as diverse as VET, AGI, Cataloguing and the CMT website. Service to our patrons is of primary importance to the Libraries, and Nick has developed way to enhance the convenience of patrons as they navigate our collections. Rather than sending patrons to several places, physically or on OSCAR, Nick has taken the initiative to establish procedures with Collection Managers to make information available in one location. Nick's attitude, personal contacts, communication skills, and public service approach to technical services represent an outstanding combination of work ethic and dedication. Patti Dittoe has shown herself to be a valuable asset to the Libraries. Among her outstanding contributions was her work to keep the Geology Library functioning during the transitional period between Reggie Brown's retirement and the hiring of Mary Scott as geology librarian. Her colleagues have noted how she cheerfully and willingly committed extra time and effort to maintaining the library during this transition. In her day-to-day contact with students in Orton Hall, Patti often goes beyond her duties to help patrons. She has even given short tours or answered questions for visitors about the unique features of the architecture in Orton. As a member of the Library Training Council, Patti has used her teaching experience to help improve student-training programs. In addition, she consistently offers recommendations for improving service in the Geology Library. Patti has given 5 years of continuous service to the Libraries. Her colleagues note that she is always courteous, helpful, and dependable. She seems to instinctively go out of her way to insure that the Geology Library operates at a level that impresses faculty and students, alike. This extra effort makes Patti an exceptional employee. We appreciate the commitment to excellence that Patti and Nick demonstrate, not only on behalf of the Libraries, but also for the entire University community. Training Opportunities & TipsPresented by the OSUL Training Advisory Council |

Web-based OSCAR/Circulation Training -- Over the past year a Subcommittee of the Training Advisory Council has been preparing Web-based training for OSCAR/Circulation. A decision was made to rely on the instructions provided for searching OSCAR in net.TUTOR, but modules covering character-based circulation, as well as an introduction to OSCAR files, records, and displays were the first to be developed and have been available for some time. An additional module dealing with updating records via both circulation and catalog maintenance modes was added in June and included full descriptions of every record type and every field within each record type. The newest addition became available in mid-July and covers basic circulation procedures using Millennium. All of the training modules being produced include complete instructions with plenty of illustrations, brief lesson reviews, and self quizzes. Check out this valuable training resource at the following URL:

Training Calendars - Calendars for the current and two future months, showing training opportunities available from the Libraries, the Office of Human Resources, OhioLINK, OHIONET, and the Computer Workshop. Alphabetic and Subject Indexes are also provided. Send comments and questions to

Kaye Madden's Promotion |
|
Kaye will still be very much connected to the Libraries. She will be taking on more and broader University development leadership responsibilities, but she will continue to oversee the Library Campaign. University Development will provide the Libraries with a new, full-time, senior development officer to work with Kaye and Shannon Tippie, our very talented Development Officer II. That search is now underway. Our new development team in the Libraries promises to be bigger and stronger than ever. Jerry May, Vice President for Development, in appointing Kaye to her new position, said "I know you will do a great job in this new capacity and will continue to make sure the Library Campaign is successful." I am sure Kaye will bring success to the University, and she will continue to be -- now in an even more influential position -- an effective advocate for the importance of the Libraries. Congratulations Kaye! Joe Branin (branin.1@osu.edu) |

In order to comply with University procedures, employees who are applying for listed vacancies must complete a Promotion/Transfer Request (form 8931, Rev 9/97) during the week of the first listing of the vacancy in the University Personnel Posting (green sheet). To ensure awareness of all vacancies which have been posted, applicants should consult the weekly green sheet rather than relying on the listing in NEWS NOTES Online and are encouraged to attach a resume and/or other supporting documents to the form. Prospective faculty and staff applicants who are absent during the five-day posting period and wish to apply should see Toni Morrison-Smith (morrison-smith.1@osu.edu) Library personnel may also review University employment opportunities at http://www.ohr.ohio-state.edu/index.htm |
