Red Cross Blood Drive

Red Cross Blood DriveDear Colleagues:

On any given day, our nation's blood supply is fragile. About four million people in the U.S. need blood every year -- that is one patient every two seconds. These calculations, which represent data for the number of volunteer blood donors for the calendar year 2001, are based on results that include the number of transfusions done per year for patients in need. It is a constant challenge to meet the growing demand for blood. That is why I am inviting you to join the American Red Cross at the Ohio State Community-Wide Blood Drive on Monday, August 12, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. in the Value City Arena at the Jerome Schottenstein Center.

Because of the continuing advances in modern medicine that have resulted in new uses for blood products, blood usage has increased dramatically in recent years. And there are many who benefit from the generosity of blood donors, including accident victims; cancer patients who have had chemotherapy; persons undergoing organ transplants and surgeries, such as hip replacements; and individuals with disorders, such as sickle cell anemia and hemophilia.

During my longtime association with Ohio State, I have always been inspired by the great Buckeye spirit our university community has demonstrated, not only at campus events, but also when helping others in need. Therefore, I encourage your participation in this noteworthy cause and "Give someone a Schott at life" on Monday, August 12. Your contribution will make a life-saving difference in someone's life. To schedule your appointment, please register by calling 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or e-mailing montgomerr@usa.redcross.org.

Together, we can save a life. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,
Edward H. Jennings
Interim President

Training Opportunities & Tips

Presented by the OSUL Training Advisory Council

Updated Training Information--Available information about training opportunities for the month of October has now been added to the Libraries' Web site. Information on training opportunities is updated continuously as it is received, and an additional month's worth of information is supplied at the beginning of each month; there should always be three months of training opportunities available for planning purposes. Only the names of classes are shown on the calendars and indexes, but links to further information about time and place of the sessions, descriptions of what's to be covered, etc. are provided to help you decide if a particular training opportunity would be of benefit to you in the performance of your work duties. Registration information for the major sources of training sessions is provided at the top of each of the month's calendars. Your special attention is called to the training sessions that are available free of charge from the Office of Human Resources, Organization and Human Resource Development (identified by turquoise print on the Calendars and Indexes), and sessions provided by the Computer Workshop (identified by fuchsia print), for which we have prepaid and will not be charged against the current budget.

Training Calendars - Calendars for the current and two future months, showing training opportunities available from the Libraries, the Office of Human Resources, OhioLINK, OHIONET, and the Computer Workshop. Alphabetic and Subject Indexes are also provided.

Thirteen Consistently Exceed Expectations

For the second year, the Libraries recognized staff members who "consistently exceeded expectations" for the 2001-02 performance review year. The Libraries' administration had anticipated that up to 10% of all staff might consistently exceed expectations for the review year. Thirteen staff members, who demonstrated overall extraordinary performance, received an additional 1% on their base pay. This was in addition to the 4.25% that staff members receive who met expectations for the year.

The staff members who consistently exceeded expectations this year are:

  • Akua Bandele - English, Theater and Communications Reading Room
  • Mark Boarman - Education, Human Ecology, Psychology, and Social Work Library
  • Teresa Camelford - Serials /Electronic Resources
  • Deb Cameron - Technical Services Accounting and Administration
  • Kathy DeGray - Science and Engineering Library
  • Patrick Fix - Special Collections Cataloging
  • Elva Griffith - Rare Books
  • Lisa Iacobellis - Technical Services Accounting and Administration
  • Ryan Langhurst - Administrative Services
  • Shirley Rhea - Cataloging
  • Miroljub Ruzic - East European and Slavic Studies
  • Marilyn Scott - Cartoon Research Library
