"Some Sort of Somebody": Ohioan Elsie Janis on the Stage and in the Trenches
Columbus native Elsie Janis made her professional stage debut in 1896 at the age of seven in the newly opened Southern Theatre. From the Southern, she moved to vaudeville and legitimate stages in New York, London, Paris, and to the trenches to entertain troops during World War I, charming audiences with her songs and her clever imitations of famous people. A songwriter throughout her career, she later wrote filmscripts, articles for film magazines, and poetry, while continuing her other stage and film activities, sometimes giving work to WWI veterans for whom she created Elsie Janis and Her Gang. To borrow from a song Janis wrote with Jerome Kern, she was indeed "Some Sort of Somebody." For additional information, contact the exhibit's curator, Nena Couch, at couch.1@osu.ed or telephone 614-292-6614.

May 1 - August 29, 2003
Ohio Cartoonists
Ohio has a remarkable place in the history of American cartooning. Among the "firsts" displayed in this exhibit are works by the creator of America's first comic strip, the first syndicated editorial cartoonist, and the first woman editorial cartoonist. Work by cartoonists who were born, educated or worked in Ohio are featured. For additional information, contact the exhibit's curator, Lucy Shelton Caswell, at cartoons@osu.edu or telephone 614-292-0538.

For additional information, contact the exhibit's curator, Geoff Smith, at smith.1@osu.edu or telephone 614-292-5938.

Upcoming exhibition at Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library, 27 West 17th Avenue Mall:

Thomas Nast: American's First Great Cartoonist
The exhibit features woodcuts and original ink drawings by Nast. The library's regular hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Hours vary between terms. The library is closed on national and University holidays. For additional information, contact the exhibit's curator, Lucy Shelton Caswell, at cartoons@osu.edu or telephone 614-292-0538.

The Ohio State University Cartoon Research Library, Department of History, and School of Journalism and Communication will host a symposium Thomas Nast: A Celebration of His Contributions to American Culture on December 7, 2002, to mark the centennial of Thomas Nast's death. Known as the Father of American Political Cartooning, Nast's contributions to the history and culture of his adopted country were many, yet he died near obscurity. Two leading Nast scholars, Morton Keller and Draper Hill, will lead the one-day conference to be held on the Ohio State campus on Saturday, December 7, 2002. In addition, a Web site highlighting examples of Nast's most influential cartoons with a companion Web-based teacher's guide will be mounted to assist educators in using Nast as part of their American history and culture curriculum.

All of these exhibits are free and open to the public.

Branin Conducts Workshops in Spain

Book: La Historia del Libro

Joseph Branin, director of University Libraries, recently spent two weeks in Spain. His visit was at the invitation of the Consorci de Biblioteques Universitaries de Catalunya and the Consorcio de Universidades de la Comunidad de Madrid y de la UNED. These two consortia of academic libraries invited Branin to Barcelona and Madrid to conduct three-day workshops on the topic of the "Changing Nature of Collection Management in Research Libraries," workshops based on a paper he and two colleagues published two years ago on this topic.

"The teaching was intense," he says, "I had to prepare the workshops, speak for about three hours each day, and answer a lot of questions. Each workshop had about forty participants. In Barcelona there was no translation, but in Madrid the consortium did use simultaneous translation. I spoke in English, which was translated into Spanish, and questions to me in Spanish were translated into English. Once I got used to the translation routine, I felt very comfortable. Many of the participants spoke English, to some extent."

He continues, "I always enjoy traveling. I find it refreshing and educational to visit other countries and exchange information about library management. In Spain, there is great interest in American libraries. I found this to be true when I visited China a few years ago. They admire our wealth of modern resources and our advances in information technology. In turn, I admire their longer histories, depth of collections, and commitment to international cooperation."

Branin has been invited back to Madrid late this summer to participate in a digital libraries seminar. He is one of the many faculty and staff members who serve as knowledge ambassadors on behalf of the OSU Libraries.
