"Happiness in this world, when it comes, comes incidentally. Make it the object of pursuit, and it leads us on a wild-goose chase, and is never attained."

Ohio Support Staff Institute Closing Session

The Ohio Support Staff Institute would like to issue an invitation to the library community throughout the state and to those in nearby areas to come and join us for our closing session for the August 2002 Institute.

On Wednesday August 7th from 9:00-11:30 a.m. we will hold the closing session for the Institute, entitled "Technology Futures, Libraries, and You", a panel session that includes some of the most dynamic, involved, and perceptive members of Ohio's library community today.

The panel includes Mr. Tom Sanville, Executive Director of OhioLINK, the statewide consortia for Ohio's university and college libraries; Mr. Michael Lucas, the State Librarian of Ohio and Ms. Theresa M. Fredericka, Executive Director of INFOhio, the information network for Ohio's schools.

Join us as we get a unique view from each of our panelists on these subjects. This session is offered free and is open to the public. We hope you will join us on the Ohio Dominican College campus on Wednesday August 7th, 2002!

Mary Reis and Jan Wagner
Receive Spot Bonus Award

Jan Wagner (L) and Mary Reis (R)

University Libraries congratulates Mary Reis and Jan Wagner on their Spot Bonus awards. Ordinarily, Mary and Jan are engaged in processing new materials, supervising students, and assisting Library patrons. In addition to these daily activities, Mary and Jan have accomplished several special projects in the Microforms/Periodicals Room.

They have re-configured the space in MIC without adding cabinet and shelving units. The project required them to prepare to move two large microprint sets out of MIC and into the Ohio State University Book Depository. They created item records, and worked on labeling, barcoding, and processing for these microprint sets: 1,158 boxes of United State Government non-depository publications and 266 boxes of the British House of Commons sessional papers.

Mary and Jan are also completing a project designed to retain microfilm newspapers while not adding microform cabinets in MIC. Their work on this project has entailed barcoding and building item records for all newspapers, and sending selected titles to storage. Approximately 2,200 reels of microfilm have been sent to the depository as part of this project.

Their creative recommendations for alternate placement, exchange and use of shelving for Reference tools, audiotapes, CD-ROMS, and newspapers saved the Libraries approximately $6,000. This money originally had been approved to purchase counter height shelving for the MIC Reference tools. A counter height shelving unit from ISD had been designated for MIC, but Jan and Mary suggested that the unit go to the Government Documents Collection to give that area a more open look while accommodating shelving requirements for MIC.

When you visit the Microforms/Periodicals Room, you'll immediately notice a change in the way the room is arranged and space, utilized. Previously, four cabinet units and two rows of tall shelving blocked the view to the windows. Jan and Mary created special arrangements that allow for a view of the windows in that area. Spaces throughout the Main Library have been improved and upgraded, due to the commitment of Library faculty and staff like Mary and Jan, who make the Libraries an outstanding place to work and study.

Undergraduate Research Forum

Professor Maureen Donovan and Alexandra Leslie
Professor Maureen Donovan and Alexandra Leslie

Alexandra (Alex) Leslie, a senior, Japanese major from Australia, participated in the Richard J. and Martha D. Denman Undergraduate Research Forum on May 21, 2002. Alex's project, "Analyzing Japanese Hospitality Web Sites" studied the World Wide Web as implemented in Japan. The purpose of her project was to collect and analyze data on the use of the web in the Japanese Hospitality Industry and to develop a strategy that teachers could teach to intermediate-level students of Japanese to enable them to find quality information. Alex's Japanese major focuses on literature and linguistics, but she has a special interest in the hospitality industry.

Maureen Donovan, Associate Professor and Japanese Studies Librarian, has been Alex's instructor for J693, Individual Studies. Alex is a student assistant in East Asian Studies - Japanese, assisting Professor Donovan on a project to catalog Japanese websites of a scholarly interest for a database for the Digital Asia Library, based at the University of Wisconsin.

The Denman Undergraduate Research Forum encourages undergraduates to participate in research to enhance their educational experience and to enrich their learning. In addition, the Forum seeks to develop the capacity of all undergraduates to make contributions to science and society.
