Computer Workshop Training Opportunities Did you know that the OSU Libraries pays for attendance at Computer Workshop (Dublin) sessions in advance? A number of opportunities are still available for library employees to attend a needed workshop; don't let the bleak budget outlook deter you from seeking the training that you need. Check our calendar to see whether that workshop you want will be offered this month, secure the permission of your supervisor, and then sign up through Betty Sawyers (sawyers.1@osu.edu; 2-4491). The Computer Workshop offers a wide variety of classes; only those of more general application--e.g., Word, Excel, Access, HTML, and PowerPoint--are routinely shown on the calendars. If you are interested in another software application, please contact Betty to see if it is included in their offerings. Jean McMeans is being acknowledged this month with a University Libraries Spot Bonus award for her handling of the OSCAR problems in Accounting. During February, Jean warned Laura Tull and the departments who work in OSCAR financials that she'd discovered that 9 funds were out of balance. Jean then studied the fund reports to try to figure out what went wrong. The fund activity information looked correct on the surface, but the totals for funds were incorrect. Jean discovered that during posting, the system debited twice for entries. Innovative was notified and Jean interacted with the Innovative staff who recommended a solution and said that the problem would be fixed. Unfortunately, the problem remained. To resolve the problem, Jean performed some detective work and identified erroneous transactions in the system. Her work was complicated by the additional transactions that had occurred after Innovative gave the go ahead when they thought the problem was fixed. Everyone was asked not to do financial work in the system while Jean was investigating it. This is the first time this problem has occurred in the fifteen years OSUL has been on the Innovative system. According to Tschera Connell, Acting Head, Technical Services Accounting and Administration and Serials Coordinator, Serials and Electronic Resources, "None of us could rely on our experience to know what was going on. Jean was indispensable in getting the problem fixed. She figured out exactly what had happened, advised me on implications, quickly notified Deb Cameron of the problem, and advised Laura Tull during her communications with Innovative." With her immediate supervisor out on extended medical leave, Jean had to do most of the work. She remained committed throughout the process, as she studied the problem, ran multiple copies of all the reports needed at year-end closing, and cleared the system. The funds are finally balanced. Jean did an exceptional job and we congratulate her on receiving this award. Chiquita Mullins Lee (mullins-lee.1@osu.edu) |

In order to comply with University procedures, employees who are applying for listed vacancies must complete a Promotion/Transfer Request (form 8931, Rev 9/97) during the week of the first listing of the vacancy in the University Personnel Posting (green sheet). To ensure awareness of all vacancies which have been posted, applicants should consult the weekly green sheet rather than relying on the listing in NEWS NOTES Online and are encouraged to attach a resume and/or other supporting documents to the form. Prospective faculty and staff applicants who are absent during the five-day posting period and wish to apply should see Toni Morrison-Smith (morrison-smith.1@osu.edu) Library personnel may also review University employment opportunities at http://www.ohr.ohio-state.edu/index.htm |
