Spot Bonus Award Winner

Jim Murphy
Jim Murphy in front of a display in the Baggs Ceramics Library.

Jim Murphy has received a spot bonus for his work on two projects outside his usual duties in the Cataloging Department by completing cataloging for the Baggs Ceramics Library and worked on the development of Electronic Theses and Dissertations (ETDs).

As a liaison between Susan Wyngaard in the Fine Arts Library, Mary Jo Bole in Fine Arts, Theresa Wei in Cataloging, and the Libraries Serials/Electronic Resources department, Jim drew on his expertise in the history of ceramics to handle the unique items in the Baggs Ceramics Library, an important collection of monographs and serials. He also worked with the Labeling Department to expedite the complicated process of handling rare materials. As he plans the next phase, Jim is preparing to catalog an important artifact (realia) collection housed in the Baggs Library. This unique addition to the Libraries' catalog, and its possible inclusion of digitized images, will be of immense value to ceramics departments throughout the world.

Jim has also worked to help develop Electronic Theses and Dissertations. He has researched how other university libraries are handling ETDs and, considered how ETDs will be incorporated in a new workflow. He also recognized the need to educate graduate students on information needed to catalog theses and dissertations, and has worked with Jane Duffy to develop presentations on ETDs.

The Libraries benefit from the work of such dedicated staff members, and we congratulate Jim on this award, because he plans on using the money on books for the Baggs Collection and archaeology books that the Libraries lack.

Barbara Dunham Wins Kent State Award

Barbara Dunham, Library Associate, Serials Cataloging, has won the Kent State University Beta Phi Mu Scholarship Award for 2002. The award is presented annually to the student who has written the best research paper, as chosen by the faculty. Graduate students from the Columbus and the main Kent campus compete for this honor. Faculty and staff review submissions to select the best thesis. Her paper is entitled, Different Formats: Linking Series Titles for Display Through Bibliographic Relationships. Is it Possible? Barb earned her MLIS degree at Kent State in 2001.

"I'm pleased because it was a lot of hard work. I hoped it would have value to somebody else in the library world," says Barb, whose paper is available online and published in Library Collections, Acquisitions, and Technical Services, edited by Carol Diedrichs.

According to Trisha Davis, associate professor and head of the Serials & Electronic Resources Dept., "Anne Rasmussen, also in S/ER, won this award two years ago. The Libraries should be very proud that we have employed two of these outstanding graduates. Barb is one of the Libraries' 'hidden gems' and a fascinating person."

While earning a Master of Arts for Teachers at Indiana University, she worked for Indiana Bell. She moved to Columbus in 1974. She was as a substitute teacher for Worthington City Schools and worked nights at Ohio Bell. After receiving a promotion, she went into equipment engineering.

She changed careers to cultivate her interest in information and librarianship from a user perspective. She interviewed public and academic librarians, and corporate researchers about their work. Her interest was academic libraries and the detail work involved in cataloging and technical services. To gain experience, she worked part-time for one year with the Department of Natural Resources in the Natural and Area Preserves library.

Barb has worked for the Ohio State University Libraries twice. She worked in S/ER for 11 months and left in April 2001. In December 2001, she came back. She handles cataloging information, changing titles, temporary records, and requests from regional libraries. She returned to Ohio State to take a job that would allow her to focus on cataloging and making information accessible to users. She wants to continue to do research on issues related to cataloging, and she hopes for opportunities to write.

Barb describes librarianship as a changing, exciting field, and of her colleagues, she notes, "It's a nice group to work with downstairs. I enjoy it a lot. I feel very fortunate."

In 2001, she became Reference Librarian at Columbus State, a job she continues today, as she explains, "There's always been a teacher side to me. That's why I'm working reference at Columbus State teaching students how to find information."

Of her award-winning thesis, she says, "Dr. Tschera Connell served as technical advisor on paper and along with Dr. Kim at Kent State. I credit them for my success. Dr. Connell really helped set it up. Carol Diedrichs helped to get it out for peer review."

Barb received her award on April 9th at The Kent State Honors and Awards Dinner in Kent. University Libraries congratulates her on this accomplishment.
