OSUL Scholarly Communications Lecture

The Ohio State University Libraries invite you to attend

“Who Will Control Scholarly Publishing in the 21st Century?
Threats and Opportunities for the Academy”

The 1st lecture in the series:
“Creating Change: The Impact of Technology and Economics on Scholarly Communication”

Friday, April 5, 2002
10 am - 12 noon
OSU Faculty Club Grand Lounge

Featured Speakers:
Stanley Chodorow
Prof. Emeritus, University of California-San Diego and Former Provost,
University of Pennsylvania

Joseph J. Branin
Director of Libraries
The Ohio State University

The production of scholarly information has skyrocketed over the past four decades. Astute commercial publishers have recognized the potential to profit from this boom and have increasingly taken control from scholarly societies and university presses. Core values of scholars and the free exchange of information have become secondary to bottom line concerns. The scholarly communication system is deeply tradition-bound, but it can change. Stanley Chodorow, a key figure in the debate on scholarly publishing reform and Joseph Branin, director of University Libraries will examine the threats and opportunities for scholarly publishing in the 21st century.

Hilandar Research Library Presents Bishop Kallistos

The Resource Center for Medieval Slavic Studies and Hilandar Research Library of the Ohio State University Libraries present a talk with world-renowned theologian, Bishop Kallistos Ware of Diokleia, author of The Orthodox Church. Bishop Kallistos will speak on Silence and Glory: The Message of St. Gregory Palamas for the World Today. The talk is scheduled for Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at 8 p.m. in Room 100, Independence Hall, 1923 Neil Avenue. The event is free and open to the public. Orthodox.TV will conduct a live audio broadcast over the Web while simultaneously recording the lecture in digital video for later "video-broadcast." Orthodox.TV receives over 600,000 hits per month from 42 countries worldwide.

Bishop Kallistos is well known for his writings on Orthodox faith and practice and has been hailed as one of the 20th century's foremost authorities on Orthodoxy. A British native, he was ordained to the priesthood at age 32 and took monastic vows at St. John the Theologian Monastery on the Greek island of Patmos. On April 10, he will appear at Annunciation Greek Orthodox Cathedral for an IOCC (International Orthodox Christian Charities) fund-raising event and lecture. IOCC, responsible for more than $130 million in relief and development work in 21 countries, is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Bishop Kallistos' talk at the IOCC event is part of a three-day stay in Columbus organized by Hilandar Research Library Curator Predrag Matejic.

The Hilandar Research Library (http://www.cohums.ohio-state.edu/cmrs/rcmss/) is a special research collection for the study of medieval Slavic Orthodox Christianity. The Hilandar collection is composed of medieval Slavic manuscripts on microfilm, based on the manuscript collection of the Hilandar Monastery on Mount Athos. The collection contains over 4,500 manuscripts on microfilm from more than 80 different monastic, private, museum, and library collections in 21 countries. Hilandar is the largest collection of Slavic manuscripts on microfilm in North America and the leading center of medieval and early modern Slavic studies in the entire world.
