OSUL Scholarly Communications Lecture |

“Who Will Control Scholarly Publishing in the 21st Century? Threats and Opportunities for the Academy” The 1st lecture in the series: “Creating Change: The Impact of Technology and Economics on Scholarly Communication” Friday, April 5, 2002 10 am - 12 noon OSU Faculty Club Grand Lounge Featured Speakers: Stanley Chodorow Prof. Emeritus, University of California-San Diego and Former Provost, University of Pennsylvania Joseph J. Branin Director of Libraries The Ohio State University The production of scholarly information has skyrocketed over the past four decades. Astute commercial publishers have recognized the potential to profit from this boom and have increasingly taken control from scholarly societies and university presses. Core values of scholars and the free exchange of information have become secondary to bottom line concerns. The scholarly communication system is deeply tradition-bound, but it can change. Stanley Chodorow, a key figure in the debate on scholarly publishing reform and Joseph Branin, director of University Libraries will examine the threats and opportunities for scholarly publishing in the 21st century. Sponsors: The Ohio State University Libraries The Ohio State University Library Council Battelle Endowment for Technology & Human Affairs If you plan to attend and wish to confirm accessibility or request accommodations for persons with disabilities, please contact the Faculty Club’s main office at 292-2262. |
