"If we were all given by magic the power to read each other's thoughts, I suppose the first effect would be to dissolve all friendships."

Spot Bonus Awards

University Libraries is happy to announce the latest group of Spot Bonus Award winners. This week, we congratulate Tschera Connell in Serial and Electronic Resources; Ruth Sesco from the Music/Dance Library; and Ryan Langhurst in Administrative Services.

Tschera Connell Tschera Connell designed a complex spreadsheet template that was used to create more than 90 spreadsheets in support of the SCP03 project. The work required her to run Booleans on OSCAR, export data into the spreadsheet, clean up the initial version of the spreadsheet, build 7 individual macros for each spreadsheet, protect key data, and make copies for collection managers, project processing and archival purposes. Much of the work has been painfully tedious, but through her dedication, Tschera has successful completed this project.

Ruth Sesco Ruth Sesco has produced some outstanding results on behalf of the Music/Dance Library. She spent a considerable amount of time creating new job descriptions for federally- funded work-study student employees. She created new positions, as well, many of which demanded greater skills and provided higher wages than previous work-study jobs. In conjunction with this work, she's developing a student-training manual. Ruth also has been busy working with Physical Facilities to correct the humidity levels that have been causing damage to the Music/Dance Library's books. Her efforts have brought the mold problem in Sullivant Hall to the attention of Physical Facilities. The result has been a thorough cleaning of the air ducts and continued monitoring of the HVAC system. Ruth's work points to the pleasure she takes in identifying problems, claiming ownership of them, and developing ways to resolve them successfully.

Ryan Langhurst Ryan Langhurst worked for months with Physical Facilities on an estimate, and later approved a project to construct Room 135, a new office for IT. When the estimate exceeded the original amount by $9,791, Ryan negotiated a creative solution in which Physical Facilities agreed to split the cost of the overruns with the Libraries. As a result, each party was responsible for $4,895, saving the Libraries $4,895. Ryan exercised oversight, tenacity, and creativity in resolving what ordinarily might have been a non-negotiable situation.

Congratulations to these award winners. We thank them for their commitment to the work of the Libraries.
