OSU African-American Female Performer Exhibit

75 Years Onstage: OSU African-American Women in the Performing Arts

University Libraries in conjunction with the Lawrence and Lee Theatre Research Institute, celebrating its 50th anniversary, Frank W. Hale, Jr. Black Cultural Center, and Women's Student Services, commemorate Women's History Month with an exhibit in Bricker Hall. An opening reception is planned for March 12, 2002, from 5:30 pm until 7 pm in Bricker Hall. Many talented professionals in the performing arts have come from The Ohio State University. 75 Years Onstage… recognizes four African-American women whose performance activities have spanned collectively the last seventy-five years.

Ruby Elzy, who graduated from OSU in 1930, created the role of Serena in the American folk opera Porgy and Bess by George and Ira Gershwin and DuBose and Dorothy Heyward, a role that she played more than 800 times between the opera's 1935 premiere and her death in 1943. Her work included roles on stage and in films, most notably her 1933 film debut as Dolly in The Emperor Jones, starring Paul Robeson and her 1941 appearance in Birth of the Blues with Bing Crosby and Mary Martin, in which she sang "St. Louis Blues."

Adrienne Kennedy graduated from OSU with a degree in elementary education. Her play Funnyhouse of a Negro won the Obie Award and launched her career as a playwright. Other works include Orestes and Electra, The Alexander Plays, The Ohio State Murders in which she explores the racism she experienced during her college years, Sleep Deprivation Center, and her autobiography, People who Led to my Plays.

Toni-Leslie James, costume designer, graduated from The Ohio State University with the MFA in Theatre design. Among her numerous credits are The Tempest, Twilight... Los Angeles 1992, Angels in America: Millennium Approaches and Perestroika, Jelly's Last Jam, Marie Christine, Macbeth, Henry VIII, The Caucasian Chalk Circle as well as work at Lincoln Center Theater, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, the Royal Court and Chichester Festival Theatre in England, operas, dance, industrials, and television.

Bebe Miller, American dancer, choreographer, and company director, completed the master's in dance at Ohio State in 1975. In 1985 she formed the Bebe Miller Company, which has toured throughout the U.S. and Europe. Her works include Trapped in Queens, Two, The Habit of Attraction, Thick Sleep, Rain, The Hendrix Project, Nothing Can Happen Only Once, Tiny Sisters in the Enormous Land, Blessed, and Going to the Wall. Companies around the world such as the PACT Dance Company in South Africa, Oregon Ballet Theatre, Boston Ballet, Phoenix Dance Company in England, and Dayton Contemporary Dance Company have performed Miller's work. Among her awards are two New York Dance and Performance Awards ("BESSIE") for Choreography.

Miller is on the OSU Department of Dance faculty. She will be present during the reception to discuss her work.

Interview With Library Fund-Raisers

Internationally themed promotional poster for Campus Campaign 2002.

Recently, we sat down with a couple of the people involved in Campus Campaign 2002, Shannon Tippie and Kaye Madden. We started off the interview by asking for some information about this years Campus Campaign.

Shannon Tippie:
Campus Campaign 2002 is taking an international theme this year. There will be a kickoff party for all students, faculty, and staff on March 11, at 3:30pm in the Fawcett Center. Everyone is welcome, not just volunteers for Campus Campaign. We want library staff to know that volunteers will be coming around soon. Campus Campaign is over 20 years old and is the most successful Faculty/Staff campaign in the entire nation. Most people don't know that only one third of the entire University budget comes from state funding. Another third comes from tuition, research grants, and other fees. The final third comes as donations from corporations, foundations, alumni, other donors, and from Campus Campaign.

Kaye Madden:
It's important to realize that OSU is "state assisted," not "state supported."

Shannon Tippie:
That's why the campaign has been so successful, you can really see the benefits of your gift. With such a strong campaign, deans can go to corporations and show them how much we've helped ourselves. When we can show our own commitment to education it is easier to convince donors to help out.

NEWS NOTES Online:
Do you have any specific goals set for contributions?

Shannon Tippie:
No, we are just trying to increase participation each year. When we focus on participations, the money just follows. Last year participation was at a record high of 35%, up from 25% the previous year. It helps in conversations about renovations to cite such high participation among faculty and staff. It's all about "I Believe In Ohio State."

Kaye Madden:
You can be donor and be counted in that percentage for donating even $1. I believe that pre-tax payroll deduction is the easiest pay to give though. You don't really miss $10 a month, so it's painless to give that way. Just a little bit every month...

Shannon Tippie:
...Isn't so shocking to the system. We have some events planned for Campus Campaign 2002: On April 22nd we'll be having an international lunch buffett and bake sale. We encourage all Library employees to bring in their favorite dish. In late sping, early summer we'll be having an ice cream social again and we'll be having raffle items again also. If anyone has any questions or wants to help you can contact either of us, or Linda Johnson who has been running Campus Campaign for a long time. She's such an energetic person!
