To: Magda El-Sherbini, Head, Cataloging Department

From: Carol P. Diedrichs, Assistant Director for Technical Services and Collections

Subject: Cataloging Interfaces Working Group

I am asking that you convene the above-named Working Group, and, by this same memo, I am asking the following to serve with you:

Tschera Connell, Serials/Electronic Resources Dept.
Marsha Hamilton, Monographs Dept.
Beth Russell, Special Collections Cataloging Dept.
Laura Tull, Information Technology Division

The Cataloging Interfaces Working Group is charged to:

  1. Evaluate the timeline and status of the implementation by OCLC of its replacement for the Passport cataloging system and recommend a course of action for the OSU Libraries.
  2. Review the new MilCat software from III and recommend a course of action for the OSU Libraries.
  3. Review our local workflow in recommending needed changes and a timeline for the implementation of both of these new software packages.
  4. As a result of potential changes in workflow with these new pieces of software, consider the implementation of the PCC core standard and our ability to become BIBCO participants for original cataloging or upgraded copy.

An interim report should be provided to Carol Diedrichs by July 1, 2002, followed by a final report no later than September 1, 2002.

Thank you for your willingness to take on this important task.

Neuroscience Exhibit at
Health Sciences Library

A display of artwork now on display at The Ohio State University Medical Center depicts scientists' growing understanding over the past several centuries of the human brain and the field of neurosciences.

The collection "Art of Neuroscience: Image and Understanding, 1518 - 2000," is on display through June 30 in the fifth floor Medical Heritage Center of the Prior Health Sciences Library, 376 W. 10th Ave. The exhibit is free and open to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.

The collection begins with simple line drawings by artists and illustrators from the 1500's and culminates with images depicting today's understanding of the nervous system, including detailed electronic scans of the brain in the midst of thought.

Ohio State is the first stop for the exhibit, which is on loan from the National Academy of Sciences. In June the exhibit will travel to Johns Hopkins University.

Spot Bonus Award Winners

We recognize two outstanding Libraries staff members with Spot bonus awards -- Lila Carpenter in the Business Office, and Kaye Madden, the Libraries Development Officer.

Lila Carpenter Circulation policy guidelines had not been updated for years. Lila Carpenter took the initiative to revise and update these guidelines for review and implementation by the Circulation Department. Her efforts will improve the understanding of the libraries' circulation policies and will help to reduce the stress between Libraries, Business Office, and patrons by minimizing the time between issuing fines and receiving payments. Lila also had gathered statistics from OSCAR/Felix systems regarding overdue fines. This project will prevent thousands of dormant records from clogging the system. In addition, her work will return lost books and generate monies for the system. Lila's work has expedited the entire process of waiving, deleting, collecting and transferring journals for long-term outstanding fines.

Kaye Madden Kaye Madden has worked tirelessly to cultivate donors to support the Library Campaign. She has worked carefully, thoughtfully, and most importantly in a most positive, optimistic way. Her expertise and hard work have quickly transformed the University Libraries from a quiet backwater of development to a hot spot on campus. As she continues to identify potential donors, and to organize and strategize development initiatives, she creates a dynamic, professional development program in the Libraries. This crucial work is a testament to her energy and talent.

The Libraries Spot Bonus Initiative recognizes and celebrates the extraordinary deeds that further the mission of the Libraries "to be a world-class library system by providing outstanding resources and services." These bonuses foster a culture that values meritorious contributions of staff. At the same time the awards, encourage excellent performance, and provide meaningful and immediate appreciation before the end of the fiscal year. The recipient of the approved Spot Bonus may choose from either a $200 cash award or an equal value gift certificate. The Spot Bonus awards started August 1, 2001 as a test for one year. Information on the Spot Bonus program is available on the Thurber "W" drive.
