This exhibition brings together a collection of 26 photographs
taken in various places around the world. They are a small part of a larger
collection (several hundred slides and prints) of photos I have taken over
the past 35 years in the countries of Latin America, Europe, Africa, and
Asia. I lived in Brazil from 1971 to 1988, traveling many times
throughout that country. From there, and now the United States, I visited many countries in Latin America and
other regions.
This
selection of photos underlies a thesis I am developing for a new book on the
history of Brazil.
Geographically Brazil is part of South America.
However, geo-culturally, it results from a dense mixture of western African,
Portuguese, Roman, and Arabic influences. Geo-culturally, it extends from
eastern South America across the southern Atlantic to western Africa, especially
the Congo River valley, and through the Mediterranean from Iberia to the
Levant.
If you are interested in viewing other photo essays on the
comparative material culture of the Americas, you may visit online exhibits for American
First Nations, Anglo America, Basque America, Germanic America,
French America, Spanish America, and Portuguese America at:

The exhibition continues until the end of this academic year. It will be the closing event of LAT as the Thompson (Main) Library closes for renovations over the next three years ( see http://library.osu.edu/sites/renovation/ ).
