Known Database and E-journal Problems
2/9/07
The following are reference database and electronic journal known problems for which there are no solutions.
| Title | Problem |
| America: History and Life | Records earlier than approximately 1986 do not have ISSNs and Find It! does not work. Many records look like they describe a book, but they are actually book reviews. None of these records have ISSNs. |
| Business and Industry | Many records have full text provided by the
database producer and that full text resides on an OhioLINK server. Words
in the full text are indexed. Printing full-text may not work on public workstations due to the print drivers used on the older model laser printers attached to some public workstations. |
| Contemporary Women's Issues | Many records have full text provided by the
database producer and that full text resides on an OhioLINK server. Printing full-text may not work on public workstations due to the print drivers used on the older model laser printers attached to some public workstations. |
| EBSCO and Firefox browser | After you do a search and display one record you
MUST use the EBSCO Refine Search link to
get back to the search form. After you type your new search term into the
search form you MUST click the Search
button to perform the search.
If you use the browser BACK button to return to the search form and you press the Enter key to perform a new search the system does not process your search and redisplays the last EBSCO record you viewed from your previous search. [2/9/07] |
| EBSCO PDFs | Must use Adobe Acrobat v6 or v7. If some PDF
pages do not print click the printer icon in the Acrobat toolbar; click the
Advanced button, check Print as Image.
Poor quality EBSCO PDFs is a known problem. Follow the OhioLINK Find It link in an EBSCO citation to see if we have access to full text via another provider. |
| Education Abstracts | Full text may also be provided by H. W. Wilson. This full text is called [attached text] in the citation. |
| Electronic Journal Center | When new e-journals are added to the EJC it may
be several weeks before records appear in OSCAR with links to the
EJC. Off-campus access to full text may not be possible when the citation is in the EJC but the full text is accessed from the publisher's Web site. Both OhioLINK's and the OSU Libraries' proxy software may not be able to handle the multiple pass-throughs. Publishers effected are
No need to report missing volumes or issues. Do report missing or illegible pages. EJC check-in database is available for library staff to use; see FAQ. 7/14/05 Other EJC documents of interest: Collection Development Staff page (library staff only, requires OhioLINK password) and look at the Electronic Journals section documents and the Collection Development Documents: Databases & Electronic Resources document. |
| ERIC (Educational Resources Information Center) | Records earlier than approximately 1991 lack
ISSNs and Find It! does not work. In September 2000, OhioLINK loaded full text for ERIC Digests (2000+ titles). ERIC began using the Publication Type field for ERIC documents in 1974 and for journal articles in 1979. Many earlier records do not carry a Publication Type, although some do. This means that if you limit a search by Publication Type (.AT.), your results are, in general, limited to late-1970's and later. If you want to find all journal articles on a topic in ERIC, regardless of date, limit your search to Source CIJE instead of Publication Type. |
| Historical Abstracts | Records earlier than approximately 1986 lack ISSN's so Find It! does not work on those citations. Records for foreign language journals have no ISSN's, so Find It! does not work. |
| Humanities Abstracts | Citations may have full text provided by H.W. Wilson; this full text is shown as [attached full text] in the citation. |
| Ingenta & IngentaSelect e-journals | PDFs must open in a separate Acrobat Reader window. If the PDF tries to open within the browser you will get an error message. Change the Acrobat Reader set-up on your computer. Library staff can report the problem to the Libraries' IT staff via the Web form. |
| ISI Web of Science v.7 | Cited Reference
search is finding pre-1980 citations now that OL has upgraded to the newest
version of the ISI software. Check any of those entries and finish the
search and the article that cited that reference is not
found because it's pre-1980 not part OhioLINK's
1980-present ISI file. [6/9/05] Off-campus users can print, save, email marked records via the OSUL EZProxy. 9/16/05. |
| JSTOR | Printing JSTOR PDFs can be slow on the
Libraries' public workstations, sometimes 1-2 min. per page. Users can
change the PDF print settings from PDF-High Quality default to PDF-Economy,
which is nearly identical in quality and prints significantly faster.

| OLinks doesn't work | Report
any OLinks link to full text that does not work.
Food Science and Technology: OLinks fails because the article page numbers do not appear on the OLinks page. This is due to the format of the data that SP says they cannot fix. 6/5/06 |
| OpenURL Resolver problems populating ILLiad ILL forms | CABDirect: Sending only starting page to OLinks
and ILLiad. Reported to CABDirect 1/31/06. Food Science and Technology Abstracts: Not providing pagination. Reported to OVID/SilverPlatter Dec. 2005; no reply, reported again 2/1/06. Music Index: Sending only starting page to OLinks and ILLiad. Reported to Harmonie Press; no reply reported again 2/1/06. |
| OSearch | OSearch when accessed from off-campus via our EZP: On the initial search form if you open "More search boxes", "Show limit options" or "Show search history" they will not be open when you return to the search form. OhioLINK is investigating. 8/18/05. |
| RefWorks: OSU Group Subscriber Code | OSU users who do not connect to RefWorks via the Libraries' proxy server link will need the OSU Group Subscriber Code to access RefWorks or Write-N-Cite from off-campus. The OSU Subscriber Group Code and the user's username/password were in the confirmation email users received when they created their RefWorks account. To get another message with this information connect to RefWorks, click "Forgot your login?" and enter your e-mail address. RefWorks will email this information. |
| Religion Index (ATLA) | Many articles fail to link to the EJC, even though the journal is actually in the EJC, because the citations have no issue number and show only a month. |
| Social Work Abstracts | Citations before 1999 do not have ISSNs and Find It! does not work. |
| Sociological Abstracts | Records prior to approximately 1985 have no ISSN and Find It! does not work. |
| Wilson full text | The OLinks link to Wilson full text frequently does not work. Wilson says that OhioLINK is using the correct OpenURL format and that there is nothing wrong on the Wilson servers. The problem seems to happen afternoons and evenings. Connect directly to the Wilson server via link on the left and search their database. |
| Worldwide Political Science Abstracts | Records prior to 2000 lack ISSNs and Find It! does not work. |
